Cupid (lit. "desire"), also known as Amor, is the Roman deity of erotic love, identified with the Greek god Eros. Like Eros, he has a bow whose arrows can cause people to fall in love. In Virgil's Aeneid, Cupid, disguised as Aeneas's son Iulus, causes Dido of Carthage to fall in love with Aeneas; thereafter, Dido gives Aeneas safe passage. In Apuleius's Metamorphoses (better known as The Golden Ass), Cupid famously falls in love with the mortal woman Psyche.

In the European Renaissance, Cupid was a popular allegorical symbol for love as a concept.
