Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax, released outside of Japan as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne in North America and as Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call in Europe, is a director's cut edition of the 2003 role-playing game Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, the fifth entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series. It was released by Atlus for the PlayStation 2 on January 29, 2004 in Japan, on October 12, 2004 in North America, and on July 1, 2005 in Europe.

Nocturne Maniax introduces a number of quality of life improvements and new content, most notably the addition of the Labyrinth of Amala and Fiend boss fights, a new ending, and the appearance of Devil May Cry 2's Dante as a boss and recruitable character. This version became the base for the localization and later re-releases of Nocturne. Another edition titled Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax Chronicle Edition was included with the limited edition release of Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon Plus as part of a dual package, released on October 23, 2008 in Japan. This edition replaced Dante with Raidou Kuzunoha XIV.

A remaster of Maniax, titled Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster, was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on October 29, 2020 in Japan, followed by North America and Europe on May 25, 2021. The Steam version was released on the same day, May 25, in all regions. HD Remaster incorporates the changes from both the original Maniax and Maniax Chronicle Edition, with additional updates including graphical touch-ups, voice acting, a revised localization, and downloadable content. The Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of HD Remaster are based on the Chronicle Edition release, with Dante available as downloadable content. The Steam version is based on the original Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, making it the only official release of the original game in the west. Content from Maniax and Chronicle Edition are available as downloadable content for that version.

Synopsis

Main section: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne § Synopsis

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax feature a number of story additions, most particularly the Labyrinth of Amala and the Fiends. All of the content present in Nocturne is still available in Nocturne Maniax.

When Demi-fiend first enters the Amala Network, the old man appears in a theater to him, and the Lady in black explains that several Fiends have stolen Menorahs from him (Candelabra in the original English Localization), and she asks the Demi-fiend to retrieve them and explore the Kalpas in the Labyrinth of Amala. Should he refuse, the Fiends will not attack him, but he will also be incapable of entering the Labyrinth of Amala, and thus be locked out of the new True Demon Ending.

However, if Demi-fiend accepts the request from the lady in black, he will be given the Menorah of Sovereignity, and tasked to defeat the numerous Fiends and retreive the Menorahs from them, as well as reach the end of the Labyrinth of Amala. The Fiends will now attack the Demi-fiend at certain spots of the world, though they are optional. Upon completing a Kalpa, the Demi-fiend can use a peephole to see into the room of the old man and lady in black, where she will explain parts of the plot that were left unexplained in the original game. In order to open the door to a Kalpa, the Demi-fiend must present specific Menorahs obtained by defeating certain Fiends. A Kalpa must be completed in order to access the following one, ie the second Kalpa cannot be entered if the first Kalpa was not completed.

The first Fiend the Demi-fiend encounters is the Matador in the Ginza Underpass, where he forcefully summons Demi-fiend, making it the only mandatory Fiend fight.

Dante menacing the Demi-fiend

Later, after surviving the Mantra Court of Strength in Ikebukuro, Dante suddenly attacks the Demi-fiend, forcing him into a battle. After the fight, Dante reveals that he was hired by an old man to kill demons, which include the Demi-fiend. Dante takes an interest in the demon hybrid, and orders him to survive so they can fight another time. Dante can then be fought again in the 3rd Kalpa, and recruited in the 5th Kalpa.

At the end of the 4th Kalpa, the Demi-fiend must fight the lord of the flies Beelzebub.

In the 5th Kalpa, the voice of God Metatron must be defeated to reach the end.

At the end of the 5th Kalpa, the Demi-fiend descends an elevator and reaches the room with the old man and lady in black. She congratulates him, calling him "the demon of darkness", hoping they can defeat the Absolute One with the help of the newborn demon. The lady in black tasks the Demi-fiend with defeating the other humans in the Tower of Kagutsuchi, so he can become a true demon, and sends him back to the Shinjuku Medical Center. This locks him into the True Demon Ending, no matter the previous reason he was aligned with.

Lucifer towering over the Demi-fiend

After climbing the Tower of Kagutsuchi, defeating the humans, and killing Kagutsuchi, the blonde boy and the old man appear to Demi-fiend, explaining that since a demon has killed Kagutsuchi, the world will not be reborn, and the cycle of time has been destroyed. In order to prove himself worthy of leading the charge against the Great Will, Demi-fiend must defeat the true form of the old man and blonde boy: Lucifer.

The demon of darkness leading the forces of Lucifer.

After a hardeous fight, the old man once again appears to the Demi-fiend, and calls for the forces of darkness. Awarding the demon hybrid the title of "demon of darkness", the Demi-fiend is surrounded by dozens of demons, his eyes glowing red as he marches on towards what Lucifer calls "the final battle", where awaits their true enemy. The ultimate fate of the Demi-fiend and Lucifer is left ambiguous, and whether they succeeded in defeating the Absolute One is unknown.

End of spoilers.
