Spartoi is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

The Spartoi (lit. "sown ones") are warriors from Greek mythology born from the teeth of dragons when sown into the earth like seeds. They appear in the myth of Cadmus, where after killing the dragon that guarded the spring of Ares he was advised by Athena to plant the teeth of the dragon, from which the Spartoi emerged. In the account of the Bibliotheca, Cadmus is so frightened by the Spartoi that he throws a rock and, thinking one of the other Spartoi attacked them, the warriors devolve into fighting each other until only five remain. This is omitted by the account of Hellanicus, who states that only five Spartoi emerged. Cadmus then uses the Spartoi to found the city of Thebes. The descendants of the Spartoi are said to have the mark of a dragon on them, which was used by King Creon to identify his lost grandson Maeon.

The Spartoi appear again in the legend of Jason, where King Aeëtes tricks Jason into sowing dragon teeth into the earth as a trial for the golden fleece. Jason does so and is attacked by the Spartoi that emerge, however he is victorious and is the only survivor of the battle.

Design

In the Megami Tensei franchise, the Spartoi are depicted as skeletal warriors wielding swords. This is likely influenced by their depiction in the 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts, where they were designed and animated by Ray Harryhausen.
