Shan Xiao is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Shan Xiao,[a] also known as Dujiaogui,[b] is a creature mentioned in the Classic of Mountains and Seas[c] and several other pre- and post-Han texts. It is said to be a one-legged ghost covered in black hair that attacks people.[1]
In Book of Gods and Strange Things,[d] Shan Xiao is mentioned to not fear people, and delights in bringing them chills and fevers.[2]
Shan Xiao also appears in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling,[e] written during the Qing Dynasty. Here, an incident at a Buddhist shrine was described, where a monk was trying to sleep before being interrupted by the sound of creaking. Tossing and turning in bed, Shan Xiao, described as a spirit or ghost, was seen crawling through the window, before trying to grab the man with mouth and claws outstretched. He grabbed his sword to try and kill the beast, before it roared, flung his quilt off, and fled the scene. The man cried out for help, but before anyone could arrive, there was no trace of Shan Xiao except for claw marks on the wall. No one outside saw anything unusual.[3]
Shan Xiao is mentioned in the Dianshizhai Pictorial,[f] in a story called Shanxiao's Path.[g] Here, it follows the mythology from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, attacking children that venture down its path.
Design
Shan Xiao uses the name from Book of Gods and Strange Things, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, and the Dianshizhai Pictorial. The giant mouth descriptor appears to mirror Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.
