オグンは、同名のナイジェリアの鋼鉄の神に由来する。この神は人々に火と鉄を与えた文化英雄である。また、このころから酒が好きだったらしく、酩酊と踊りの神でもあった。

Ogun is considered to exist in many forms. These include a shaman, guardian, statesman, firekeeper, a sacrifice, and of course his original form as a warrior.

Ogun is derived from the Nigerian god of steel of the same name. This god is a cultural hero who gave the people fire and iron. He also seems to have been fond of alcohol around then, and was considered the god of intoxication and dancing.

In Vodou, he is a war hero and a god considered to protect warriors, hunters, blacksmiths, etc., and his name is said to mean "God of Metal". He is said to have carved a way for human civilization using fire and iron in the primordial chaotic world, and he is said to also be a cultural hero who brought order to society. Having descended to the earth as a mentor to humanity, he later became king, but it is said that he disappeared out of regret for killing an ally while drunk during a battle.
