Gameplay Changes

General

  • Ladders have been replaced with stairs.[2]
  • Similar to Shin Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei II, and Shin Megami Tensei if..., an Automap feature has been added, accessible by pressing the L button or through the COMP menu.
    • In Megami Tensei II, this replaces the auto-walk feature present in the Famicom original.
  • Certain items obtained or given to NPCs in Megami Tensei I can influence events in Megami Tensei II:
    • Nakajima can obtain an item called a Member's Card from Rag by visiting his shop again after trading him two gems. Even if it is sold, obtaining it will allow the protagonist of Megami Tensei II to obtain it for free near the start of the game.[3] The card can be traded at Rag's for a Heidrun, which can be used for a sidequest involving a family of Jack Frosts later on.
    • Giving Izanami a Silk Thread (an item obtained from Mazurka Corridor's 4F) will allow the protagonist of Megami Tensei II to obtain Izanami's Clothes after meeting her.[3]
  • The names of certain stats were changed.[2][4]
  • Demon sprites have been updated, with the designs of certain demons/bosses from Megami Tensei I changed completely.
  • Spell names have been updated to be in line with other games in the series.[2]

In Megami Tensei I

  • Demons that are a higher level than Nakajima are no longer able to be recruited.[2]
  • Dungeons have been significantly changed and simplified.[2]
  • Posmudi, Paraladi, and Petradi have been added as spells to cure poison, paralysis, and stone, respectively.[2]
  • Items can be used in battle.
  • Negotiation has been altered to be uniform with Megami Tensei II.[2]
  • The weapon and armor shops have been split into two different facilities.[4]
  • A healing fountain, Cathedral of Shadows, and a save point have been added to various areas and are no longer exclusive to Micon City.[4]
  • A casino has been added with the "Big and Small" minigame.[4]
  • The demon that Rick transforms into is now calculated based on the highest internal ID of all demons in your stock, rather than which demon is highest in the party order.[4]

In Megami Tensei II

  • More demons have been added. (Artemis, Leto, Apollo, and Zeus)[2]
  • Slime-type enemies no longer negate gun attacks, and simply resist them.
  • Save terminals are no longer represented by totem poles, and are instead computers.
