The Erlkönig, also referred to in English as the Erlking, is a character in Johann Gottfried Herder's 1778 ballad "Erlkönigs Tochter" ("Erlking's Daughter") and in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1782 ballad "Erlkönig".

Herder's ballad was a German adaptation of a Danish-language ballad known as "Herr Oluf han rider" or "Elverskud". While on the surface Erlkönig appears to be a German portmanteau meaning "alder king", it was originally a corruption of Danish ellekonge ("elf king").
