Equipment is a recurring mechanic in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Overview
Equipment are a type of item which can be equipped by party members, though typically only for humans and not demons. The types of equipment vary per game, but usually characters can equip swords (which, in the Megami Tensei franchise, refers to all melee weapons and not only swords proper), guns (which may also include other types of ranged weapons), ammunition, and four types of armor (head, body, arm, and leg).
Equipment can be restricted based on gender or alignment, or even be character-exclusive. They may also give bonuses or penalties to specific stats, and also occasionally grant a skill.
Swords and guns will have differing attack and accuracy bonuses, attack elements, targets, and number of hits. They may also inflict certain Status Ailments. Armor increases a character's defense and evasion rate, and also often changes a character's resistance spread (often referred to in the games as "Affinity").
Depending on game, ammunition may either act like other equipment and never run out, or it may be a limited resource which is expended after use of a gun attack.
Mechanics by Game
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II has six equipment types: Suits, Helmets, Gloves, Boots, Visors, and Cloaks. Equipment is divided by gender. Most equipment is sold in stores, while Visors are found only in treasure chests and Cloaks are obtained exclusively as casino prizes.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne does not include conventional equipment categories and instead has only one type of equipment, Magatama, which, in addition to affecting the protagonist's stats and resistances, can also give him the ability to learn different skills.
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Flynn can equip Head, Body, Legs, and Accessory equipment. With the exception of Accessories, most equipment are part of a matching three-piece set and will change Flynn's outward appearance when worn. Many armor sets also come in three color variations, which typically confer different elemental resistances.
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse features an identical equipment system to its precursor: most armor equipment come in three-piece sets (Head, Body, Legs), typically with different color variations available, and will change Nanashi's outward appearance. Accessories are standalone equipment and do not affect Nanashi's appearance.
Last Bible
Last Bible has three equipment types: Weapons, Armor, and Shields. Certain equipment can only be equipped by certain party members.
Certain equipment can also cast skills when used as an item from the inventory during battle. They can be cast an infinite number of times and will not consume MP when used. In the Game Boy and Game Boy Color version of the game, these equipment can be freely cast even while equipped, however in the Game Gear version, they cannot while equipped. The Boaz Staff, Jachin Staff, and Ruth's Staff are the only casting equipment that cannot be equipped by any party member.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
Party members can equip Ammo, which alters the power of their firearms and may add a chance for it to inflict an Ailment. Ammo also affects the power of the elemental shot Combo Skills involving that character's weapon.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2
Party members can equip Ammo, which functions as in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, and Karma Rings, which provide statistical bonuses to the user and passive effects during battle.
