As a Casualry, Flynn wears simple farmers' clothing comprised of a shirt covered with a simple shawl over his shoulders, brown pants, and a purse tied around his waist. His hair is long and tied back into a ponytail, with his fringe symmetrical with a point over his forehead and bangs reaching down his cheeks. Upon becoming a Samurai, Flynn wears the traditional uniform of the Samurai of Mikado. This is composed of a military style blue coat with white accents over a double breasted white shirt that resembles a kimono or hanfu. This shirt is held in place by a blue obi-like strap and belt across his waist. A second belt rests around his hips to hold his sword on the left side of his body. The rest of his clothes are similarly white, with his pants having knee protectors and his boots having belt straps. Like all other Samurai prentices in his year, he wears a scarf around his neck, with his being white. Flynn wears his Gauntlet on his left arm. During gameplay, Flynn's currently equipped armor changes his physical appearance. However in cutscenes, he is always shown wearing his Samurai uniform.
Despite being a silent protagonist, Flynn's personality is well defined across his various appearances. In both Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, he is resolute and inspirational to those around him. While certain choices presented in the first game can have him behave in a cruel or sadistic manner, he is otherwise shown to be a kind and compassionate young man, best seen in Apocalypse. His choices in boss battles imply a guile wit that allows him to gain advantages over his opponents in combat or see through their tactics. In Apocalypse, he is shown to be an adept fighter and is skilled enough to easily dodge Demons' attacks.
In Apocalypse, he is respectful and speaks highly of Nanashi when the latter is scolded by Boss. Flynn allows himself to be taken hostage by the Divine Powers to protect Asahi, and should Nanashi refuse to side with Dagda, happily treats the boy as his equal. In the DLC "Messiahs in the Diamond Realm", an alternate version of Flynn is immediately concerned for Nanashi's safety when they first meet, further showing his compassion. Another aspect of his character is his uncertainty and self doubt. Despite presenting himself as confident and stone faced in Apocalypse, he confides that he worries he would be unable to live up to the faith everyone has placed in him, though he works as best he can to live up to the monumental expectations placed on him.
End of spoilers.

Flynn appears as a black entity with a face cast in shadow that haunts Walter since childhood. He subtly manipulates Walter throughout the story, driving him into seeking more power with the goal of creating a world of chaos. As Walter struggles with the growing demonic influence inside him, Flynn continuously eggs him on to accept the power in order to change both himself and the world. While he seems entirely selfish and calculating, Flynn does appear to care for Walter, preventing him from losing himself after merging with Hiruko and giving him the clarity to save both himself and Gina. With the sky tower severed and Walter powerful and free, he fades away into darkness promising to meet again before appearing in a new world just as Walter and Gina are about to be selected by the gauntlet ceremony, smiling at a continuous world of chaos.
Flynn is identical to his appearance in his game of origin, with the only difference being that he is completely white and has his face hidden behind a cloth with a sun on it. Jonathan dreamed of him since childhood, but Flynn appears physically when the demon Amy is about to kill the young Jonathan and instantly defeats the demon before fading away. Throughout the manga he acts as a guide for Jonathan, first indirectly before directly speaking and training Jonathan while he was comatose. In the final battle against Ys he is able to fully take form and fight alongside the Samurai and inform them that the combined prayers of Tokyo and Mikado will give Jonathan the power to win. As Jonathan triumphs over Ys, Flynn thanks him for achieving what he could not before disappearing once again.
