Fusion Spells, also called Combo Skills, are a type of spell in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Overview

Fusion Spells involve the combination of multiple skills or the powers of multiple users acting simultaneously, resulting in a single skill with special effects or an amplified version of the skills used to form them.

Mechanics by Game

Shin Megami Tensei: Nine

Multiplexing is a game mechanic where, if multiple units use the same Extra or Magic ability, it will result in either another ability being performed (e.g. Maragi instead of Agi or Bonecrusher instead of Tackle) or, if no such dedicated Multiplexed-ability exists, the ability will be performed with an increased level.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

A set of Magatsuhi Skills, unlocked by obtaining that skill's Periapt, require at least two demons to be cast. These skills can only be cast by one of the required demons, though the other requirements may remain in the stock. Nine Periapts specify that the demons must be of a specific Alignment, while the other 18 Periapts directly name the demons involved in the skill.

Transfer Skills involve the player's active demon and a demon in their stock. Once unlocked, the player may cast a Transfer Skill by clicking on the demon's portrait in their Transfer Skill Stock display, consuming an amount of Stocks and Magnetite. The used Transfer Skill depends on the stocked demon's inheritance type and both demons' stats and features. Some special Transfer Skills require both a specific active demon and a specific stocked demon[1].

Persona 2: Innocent Sin

Fusion Spells in Innocent Sin are spells activated by having different party members use certain skills or types of skills in a specific order during the course of a single round of battle, which results in moves with unique effects, or moves with an output that resembles a more powerful version of the skills used to create it. Fusion Spells are only usable in battle and in order for them to succeed all participants must be alive, cast their respective skills consecutively (although enemy turns do not interrupt the process), and cannot be affected by a status effect that would prevent them from using their Persona that turn.

For a list of Fusion Spells, see List of Persona 2: Innocent Sin Fusion Spells.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

Fusion Spells in Eternal Punishment function the same as they do in Innocent Sin, though some have adjusted or modified requirements.

For a list of Fusion Spells, see List of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Fusion Spells.

Persona 3

Fusion Spells act as special moves with unique names that are performed by combining the power of two Personas at the same time during battle. Only Makoto Yuki is capable of utilizing Fusion Spells, requiring two compatible Personas to be in his stock, and to have one of them equipped during battle. When the requirements are met, the Fusion Spell will appear as a skill in both Personas' move sets, only visible during battle, and can be used at any time at the cost of a percentage of his SP. When activated, an animation will play displaying Yuki's character portrait, as well as the respective Persona portraits, before the move is used.

For a list of Fusion Spells for Persona 3, see Skills in Persona 3 § Fusion Spells. For Persona 3 FES, see Skills in Persona 3 FES § Fusion Spells.

Persona 3 Portable

Fusion Spells are activated by single-use items that correspond to a given spell, and Fusion Spell items can be used any time by the protagonist via selecting them in the item menu exclusively during battle. Because Fusion Spells are items, the two Personas typically required to cast any given Fusion Spell are not required to be in the user's stock, and using them does not cost any SP. Despite this, the same animation will play as in Persona 3 before a spell is used. Fusion Spell items can be acquired in a number of ways, such as trading gems at Mayoido Antiques or via Vision Quests in Tartarus.

For a list of Fusion Spells, see Skills in Persona 3 Portable § Fusion Spells.

Persona 3 Reload

Main article: Theurgy

Fusion Spells function similarly to the original release of the game, however, they are now assigned to Makoto Yuki's Theurgy instead of costing SP. The Theurgies are unlocked in the Velvet Room when both participating Personas have been registered to the Compendium and do not require them to be in the stock.

Persona 4 Golden

Main section: Follow-Up Attack § Persona 4 Golden

A mechanic resembling Fusion Spells appears in Persona 4 Golden, where a pair of specific party members will add an attack to follow up on an All-Out Attack should both of them be present in the party.

Persona 5 Royal

Main section: Showtime § Persona 5 Royal

Showtimes require two party members, at least one of which must be in the party. They randomly become available at the start of the party member's turn, and can only be used during the turn they become available.

Digital Devil Saga series

Combo Skills are skills used between two or more combatants, requiring them to have a specific set of skills set during battle. Any combatant with a compatible skill for an available Combo Skill can initiate it, provided there is at least one Press Turn available for each participant and they can each pay its cost. If the skill would generate a Half Turn, it does so for every full Press Turn icon that was consumed to cast it and consumes Half Turns as normal. Skills such as the appropriate Boost or Amp Passives and Mind Charge do not apply to Combo Skills.

Combo Skills consist both of unique skills and skills that can be used normally, but can also be cast as a Combo. In the latter case, they will typically be enhanced in some way. In the Japanese version of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, Combo Skills that are also normal skills have their names prefixed with an "L".
