Agares is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Agares is a spirit in European demonology first attested as Agarat, the 8th spirit in the Livre des esperitz, where he is said to be a duke who appears benignly with the appearance of an old man. He teaches all languages and grants lordships and great dignities in land. 36 legions are under his command.[1]

Agares is elaborated upon as the 2nd spirit in Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which draws from earlier sources. Agares is said to be a duke under the power of the east. He appears benevolently with the likeness of an old man riding upon a crocodile and carrying a hawk. He teaches all languages; causes those who flee to return and those who stay to flee; dismisses prelatures and dignities; and causes earth spirits to dance. He is of the order of the Virtues and has 31 legions under his command.[2]

In the Ars Goetia section of The Lesser Key of Solomon, which is heavily based on the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Agares is said to be the 2nd spirit summoned by King Solomon of Israel. The Lesser Key adds that the dignities he can destroy are both supernatural and temporal, and it rewords his causing of earth spirits to dance to being able to cause earthquakes.[3]
