PC-9800 series
The PC-9800 series,[a] known as the PC-98[b] for short, is a line of personal computers released by the Nippon Electric Company (NEC) from 1982 until 2000, succeeding the earlier PC-8800 series. From 1992, higher-end models were marketed as part of the PC-9821 series, and from 1995 until 2000 all new PC-9800 models produced were of the PC-9821 series. In 1997, it was succeeded by the PC98-NX series, which, despite the similar name, is not part of the PC-9800 series. The PC-9800 series was officially discontinued in 2003.
The PC-9800 series initially used 16-bit x86 processors, though later models used 32-bit processors. From 1983 onward, the PC-9800 series ran using modified versions of the MS-DOS operating system which were adapted to support the Japanese language; this operating system cannot run IBM-compatible software.
The first and only Megami Tensei game released on the platform was Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation, which released on April 4, 1997.
