PC-8800 series
The PC-8800 series,[a] known as the PC-88[b] for short, is a line of personal computers released by the Nippon Electric Company (NEC) from 1981 until 1989, succeeding the earlier PC-8000 series. In 1982, it was succeeded by the PC-9800 series, though PC-8800 models continued to be released until 1989 as a lower-cost option.
The PC-9800 series primarily used versions of Zilog's 8-bit Z80 processor. The PC-8801mkIISR model released in 1985 included an FM synthesizer, a joystick port, and enhanced graphical capabilities. This in turn was succeeded in 1987 by the PC-88VA, which replaced the Z80 with a variant of Intel's 8086 processor that was backwards compatible with the Z80 and included even further improved graphical capabilities.
The first and only Megami Tensei game released on the platform was a port of Telenet Japan's Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, which released in August of 1987, about a month after the game's initial MSX release.
