Origin

Orcs, also called goblins, are a race from J. R. R. Tolkien's novels set in Middle-earth. Tolkien borrowed the word from Old English, attested in the compound orcneas ("orc-corpses") in Beowulf and seen in a Latin–Old English glossary, where the Latin Orcus is glossed as the Old English orc. þyrs ꝉ heldeofol ("Orc. Thurse or hell-devil"). However, Tolkien's orcs were original creations, and the term was chosen due to "phonetic suitability". Since Tolkien, orcs have become a staple of the fantasy genre, appearing in works such as Dungeons & Dragons.
