Overview

Fishing was first introduced in Persona 4. The protagonist can opt to spend time fishing and trade fish in for other items.

Mechanics by Game

Persona 4

The protagonist can fish at the Samegawa after obtaining the River Rod. After picking up the Hermit rank 9 quest, he can get the Angler's Set which allows him to fish up the Guardian. In order to fish, the protagonist needs Bait. The primary source of bait is Cooking at night time. A great success while cooking yields a perfect lunch but 0 bait, a moderate success yields an okay lunch and 3 bait, and a complete failure yields 5 bait. Bait can also be obtained once per day from an NPC near the Dojima Residence who appears only during good weather. Fishing consumes time and has a limited number of attempts based on the protagonist's Diligence rank; one rank = one fishing attempt for a total of five.

The player can cast a fishing line in the river and attract a large or small fish, indicated by how many rings appear in the water around the fishing bobber, and how frequently the rings appear. If the fish has not taken the bait yet, the player can press circle to re-cast their line again and try for a different fish. After a while, the fish will take the bait, and the player must react to reel in their catch using the PlayStation controller buttons as indicated on-screen. Else, the fish will get away and waste a piece of bait.

Persona 4 Golden

Fishing is unlocked by speaking to the old man at the Samegawa Flood Plain who mentions he lost his fish hook, feeding a Tatsuhime Ladybug to Akihiko at Shiroku Pub, retrieving the fish hook, then returning it to the old man who gives the protagonist a fishing rod. This same old man will give the protagonist a deep-sea fishing rod after being shown the Guardian which allows the protagonist to fish at Shichiri Beach. The protagonist can get a bug net and catch bugs at Tatsuhime Shrine which can then be used as bait. Any extra fish can be traded away to the NPC who appears at the shrine at night for gemstones which can then be traded at Shiroku Pub for new equipment. Fish can also be used in quests.

When fishing, a colored meter will appear on the bottom of the screen to represent a fishing bobber. The player must use the left stick to move the bobber, keeping the bobber icon within the light blue area to catch a fish, and holding the confirm button when prompted to reel in the fish. Reeling speed can be increased by reading Expert Fishing. Fishing consumes time and has a limited number of attempts based on the protagonist's Diligence rank; one rank = one fishing attempt for a total of five. Reading Beginner Fishing grants another fishing attempt for an overall total of six fishing attempts.
