Calendar

The Calendar system was introduced to the Persona series in Persona 3 and subsequently included in Persona 3 FES, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. The calendar serves as an indicator of important deadlines and events throughout the story. The introduction of the calendar marked a major change in how the Persona series is structured.
Mechanics
Each Persona game starting with 3 begins in spring when the Japanese school year begins, and time passes from day to day based on the real-life calendar for the year the game takes place.
After a tutorial period that introduces the plot, characters, and systems, the player can start choosing how the game's protagonist spends their time. Per each calendar day, the protagonist has two timeslots: afternoon/after school and evening. An activity such as hanging out with a school friend will cause time to advance, and after doing an activity in the evening, time will advance to the next day on the calendar. For the majority of the calendar days, the player can choose what they want to do each day, but some days have story-related events that occur automatically and take up time.
The calendar affects multiple aspects of the game. This includes but is not limited to how Social Links have schedules that make them available only on certain days, shops have special sales based on what day it is, and school exams will take place on scheduled days. Notably, the dungeon systems are also tied to the calendar: In Persona 3, new blocks of Tartarus open after a full moon, while in Persona 4 and Persona 5, failing to clear a dungeon or palace by a specific deadline will result in a bad ending.
Other mechanics and systems related to the calendar include:
- Weather: Changes availability and activities
- Network Functions: Allows a player to see what other players did with their time
