Es is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Es is German for "it," and is one of the three agencies of the psychic apparatus in psychologist Sigmund Freud's model of the human psyche, along with the Ich (meaning "I") and the Über-Ich (meaning "over-I"). The Es represents man's unconscious base impulses and desires. In English, Freud's Es is usually referred to with the Latin word id, which conveys the same meaning.

Design

Es's depiction as a tree was inspired by a concept in Freudian psychoanalysis that posits that the appearance of trees in dreams represents mental abnormalities. The name Es was chosen to represent this idea because they were both related to the concept of "impulse". To represent that this depiction of Es has a personality and will, Kazuma Kaneko designed it with vines that form the shape of a human face and a large heart with an eyeball.[1]

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2

Instinctual desires buried deep within the human psyche. The famed Austrian psychologist, Freud, described this as one of the three agents, the id, that encompass human mentality. Es embodies this instinctual, uncoordinated energy that drives our subconscious minds towards attaining pleasure and fulfilling our own selfish needs. In reality, humans are grounded by social niceties with the ego acting as the mediator between the id and any such rules or constructs. Nonetheless, Es will attempt to draw our carnal desires to the surface, while a mind's super-ego works to counter this.

(Akuma Zensho; PSP)

Translation: An instinctual energy residing in the human unconscious. One of the three fields of the mind proposed by the psychologist Freud.

Place of origin: Unknown
In our unconscious world is the Es, an instinctual energy driven by the pleasure principle, the law of seeking only self-gratification. Ordinary people live socially and aware of reality. This is because the conscious mind called the "Ego" acts upon them. However, the Es assaults the Ego, trying to manifest itself. It is the mind called the "Superego" which acts as a restraint upon it.

Trivia

  • According to Kazuma Kaneko, Es was decided to be incorporated as a demon in the franchise because staff had issues finding tree-themed religious/folkloric figures.[1]
