Origin

According to Apollodorus's Bibliotheca, Asterius is the birth name of the Minotaur. Pausanias's Description of Greece ascribes to the Minotaur the similar name Asterion.

Design

Asterius is a golden version of Minotaur with black skin in his human portion.

Shin Megami Tensei IV

The name of the minotaur in Greek lore, meaning "starry." Poseidon, god of the sea, created a special bull as a gift to King Minos of Creta so that he could sacrifice the animal as an offering to the god. But its beauty was such that Minos kept it for himself and sacrificed a normal bull instead. Angered at this attempt to deceive him, Poseidon caused Minos' wife Pasiphae to fall in love with the bull. As a result, the bull-headed Asterius was born.

Trivia

• During development of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Asterius was considered for use as a boss. He would have been of the Deity race and be fought in Area 6, and is described in the notes as being Minotaur's original form.
