Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is a remaster of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax, rebuilt in the Unity game engine. It was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on October 29, 2020 in Japan, followed by North America and Europe on May 25, 2021. The Steam version was released on the same day, May 25, in all regions. HD Remaster incorporates the changes from both the original Maniax and Maniax Chronicle Edition, with additional updates including graphical touch-ups, voice acting, a revised localization, and downloadable content.

The Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of HD Remaster are based on the Chronicle Edition release, with Dante available as paid downloadable content. The Steam version is based on the original Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, making it the only official release of the original game in the west. Content from Maniax and Chronicle Edition are available as downloadable content for that version.

Gameplay Changes

The HD Remaster runs at a maximum resolution and framerate of 1080p and 30 FPS respectively, exclusively in 16:9 aspect ratio. Pre-rendered cutscenes are still in 480p and 4:3 ratio, with the blank space being filled by a blurred version of the cutscene.

Gameplay and cutscenes now feature voice acting in Japanese and English. The audio language can be swapped at any time or turned off.

A new Merciful difficulty was added as free DLC. This difficulty option was added to accommodate players who want to enjoy the story of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne but don't enjoy the difficulty of the game.[1] Compared to Normal, Merciful makes the following gameplay changes:

  • Enemy damage decreases by 0.5x.
  • Player damage increases by 2x.
  • Exp earned after battles increases by 3x.
  • Macca earned after battles increases by 5x.
  • Escape chance is 100%.
  • Player hit and evasion rate greatly increases.
  • Enemy encounter rate is lower.

Players can freely switch between difficulties during the game.

Players can suspend their session, allowing them to quit the game and resume their progress later without needing to save at a Terminal. The suspend save file is deleted after loading.

The number of save files was increased from 5 to 20.

Dante's skill, Son's Oath, now grants the Pierce effect, fixing the gameplay discrepancy between Dante and Raidou.

An update released on December 23, 2020, added the option to select skills during fusion. Additionally, the update simplified the skill rerolling process to being a single button press.

The French and German localizations have entirely been redone in order to be more accurate to the Japanese script. The HD Remaster also features brand new Italian and Spanish translations.

Numerous demon names in the English localization have been changed from the PlayStation 2 release:

Downloadable Content

HD Remaster received multiple sets of downloadable content upon its launch. The content differs slightly between versions of the game; the Steam version has both the "Chronicle Pack" and "Maniax Pack", which respectively add Raidou Kuzunoha XIV or Dante along with the Labyrinth of Amala and Fiend boss battles, as this version is based on the original release of Nocturne without the aforementioned additions. The Switch and PlayStation 4 versions are both based on the Chronicle Edition and so just have the "Maniax Pack" available. All versions of HD Remaster also received additional downloadable content packs that add brand new content to the game.

Trivia

  • The original Korean and Traditional Chinese releases of HD Remaster were based on the original version of the game, rather than the Chronicle editions. Though no official reason was given, the exclusion of the Chronicle content may have been done in order to avoid historical insensitivity involving Raidou Kuzunoha XIV; Raidou wears an outfit that resembles Japan's Taishō era military uniforms, which was an era of Japanese colonization in Korea and other areas of Asia. The only way for Korean or Chinese players to access the Chronicle content was to purchase the Maniax DLC featuring Dante.
    • On November 29, 2020, SEGA Asia announced that the Chronicle DLC would be released for the Traditional Chinese version of the game at some time in the near future.[3] The DLC was released on December 24, 2020, and was free for a limited time from December 24, 2020 to January 6, 2021.[4]
    • Despite eventually releasing in China, the Chronicle DLC has never been released in Korea.
