Jack-o'-Lantern, also known as Pyro Jack, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Jack-o'-Lantern is based on an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. The man is usually depicted as a tricky and mischievous person even in the face of great danger. The most famous tale involves Stingy Jack coming face to face with Satan tricking him several times in order to force deals with the devil. Once he does pass away, he finds himself unable to ascend to Heaven and unable to enter Hell due to his dealings. Satan however does give him a small ember to light his way while he wanders as the world as a ghost. Jack takes the flame and places it into a turnip which had been hollowed out making it into a lantern.

Design

Jack-o'-Lantern's design is based around a carved-out pumpkin, or more precisely, a jack-o'-lantern. It holds a lantern in one of its hands which it normally waves when performing an attack. Its eyes usually have an orange glow, however, some depictions have small white dots as the eyes instead. It wears a light blue, crooked 'witch' hat with a white stripe above the brim. It also wears a dark blue robe which upon closer inspection, reveals it does not have a torso or arms. In Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, however, it has a wildly different appearance. Unlike its design in most other entries, it lacks its robe, hat, and lantern. Instead, it has arms and legs as well as red sneakers. Its face has white dot eyes and a wide smile revealing a few teeth.

In the world of the living, he sometimes serves as a guide for travelers. Jack-o'-Lantern is good friends with Jack Frost. Some Demon Busters claim to have seen them team up as Demon Buster-busting duo Lantern Frost. Today, Jack-o'-Lantern is known as the pumpkin ghost of Halloween. It is believed that this change from turnip to pumpkin came about when the custom of Halloween first came to the United States, because Americans found that pumpkins were brighter and easier to carve than turnips.
Liberation Dx2	British fire spirits, also known as Jack O'Lantern. Will-o'-the-Wisps were the first of its kind, originating in the Cornwall region, and were believed to be the wandering spirits of the dead. They are commonly known to appear during the Halloween festivities. Pyro Jacks often come out at night to startle travelers and make them lose their way. Halloween Jack: A Pyro Jack that found itself mixed up with the Liberators' Halloween costume party. It originally planned a party of its ownーone that involved opening a gate between this world and the spirit world, letting hordes of demons loose to wreak terrorーuntil the Liberators put a stop to it. Wanting only to enjoy good times with friends, it became an ally of the Liberators after experiencing their Halloween costume party.
