Origin

Will-o'-the-Wisp or Will-o'-Wisp is the most common English name for the ignis fatuus, a phenomenon of faint flickering lights that can be seen near marshes. In English folklore, they are said to be the souls of unbaptized infants, and they carry a torch and lead travelers astray.[1]

Design

Willy's design from Shin Megami Tensei if... strongly resembles an illustration on page 133 of T. Crofton Crocker's Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland. This illustration accompanies "The Spirit Horse", a tale of the Phooka.[2] This same illustration would be used in the entry for Will o' the Wisp in Katharine Briggs' An Encyclopaedia of Fairies.
