Game Appearances

Devil Children Black Book

Shortly after his brother Nagahisa is spirited away to Makai, Setsuna Kai finds Zed in the streets of Harajuku. Zed exclaims he heard Nagahisa was taken by Petit Frosts, then activates Setsuna's Messiah Horn to transport him and Cool to Central Land in Makai.

Zed meets Setsuna again in Ice Land, just as he escapes Hel's prison and hides in Frost Town. As Zed mentions the uniqueness of Setsuna's existence as a Devil Child, and his ability to destroy entire worlds, Cool warns Setsuna that Zed carries the essence of Makai. Zed promises he is an ally, and states that an angel is accompanying Nagahisa in Sand Land. However, he must acquire the Gold Horn from Hel to reach Marble Land first, where he may then search for the White Horn. After meeting Isis in Sand Land, Setsuna reunites with Zed, who reports that Nagahisa returned to surface world with the angel. He then gives Setsuna the Purple Horn, which he promptly uses at a Circle Gate to teleport back to Harajuku.

Finally, while exploring the Deep Hole, Setsuna challenges its ruler Zebul and defeats him. Zebul applauds Setsuna's strength, to which he transforms into Zed and exclaims Zebul is his true form. Zed also reveals that he sent Setsuna to Makai so he could fulfill Lucifer's goal of activating the Ragnarok program, even though it was not a guaranteed outcome. Nevertheless, Zed is eager to see what mankind and Devils will do with the new world, then disappears. He meets Setsuna one last time outside Sanctuary, this time joined by Michael and Raphael, who encourage him to summon Hoshigami using a password from the Books of Raziel.

Nomenclature

His given name Zed (ゼット Zetto), sometimes written as 絶斗 Zetto in the manga, is the Japanese pronunciation of the letter Z, short for Zebul. His surname Takajō (高城 Takajō) means "high castle". This is a reference to "Lord of the Dwelling on High" (高き館の主 Takaki Yakata no Shu), which is the literal meaning of Baal Zebul, the god from whom Beelzebub is derived.
