Setsuna is a kendoist at Harajuku Elementary School, who is childhood friends with Zed Takajō and rival to Mirai Kaname. He vows to become stronger after his father disappeared and mother Tsubomi passed away, holding onto Tsubomi's memory through her memento, the Messiah's Horn. As strange occurrences befall the world, including snow in the middle of July, a mysterious deliveryman bursts into Setsuna's apartment, followed by the Devil Nightmare. Nightmare nearly kills Setsuna, causing him to awaken his Devil Child powers and draw a Deviliser from the deliveryman's parcel. The Deviliser summons Cool the Cerberus, and Setsuna uses his Messiah's Horn, the Rainbow Horn, to open a portal to Makai.

The two arrive in Ice Land's Frost Town, where Cool tells Setsuna that the seven Messiah's Horns and Messiah's Eyes can create the Norn Keys, which must not fall in the hands of the Great Demon Lord, since they can change the world. They get suddenly ambushed by a gang of Devils, until Setsuna is saved by Mirai and her partner Veil. Shocked that Mirai is also a Devil Child, their reunion is interrupted when Devils surround them and lock them away in Hel's castle.
