Origin

More commonly known by the name Nimue, Vivian (also spelled Viviane or Vivien) is the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend. She is a fay that resides in Avalon, and she is responsible for granting King Arthur the sword Excalibur. She raised Lancelot from infancy after the death of his father and teaches him writing, art, and combat, before sending him to the court of King Arthur so he may become one of the king's knights. Upon Arthur being fatally wounded in the battle of Camlann, Excalibur is thrown into the lake from which it was given only for Nimue to appear from within the lake to catch the sword and welcome Arthur into Avalon where he may rest until his time of need.

Outside of the main narrative of Arthur, there is a tale where Vivian learns magic from Merlin, after which she either puts him to sleep eternally, traps him under a stone, or kills him. Vivian's exact motivations vary, but it is usually after he persistently attempts to have sexual relations with her. However it is also likely that it is a conflation between her character and that of Morgan le Fay, as many scholars have hypothesized that the Lady of the Lake and Morgan were originally one and the same before being defined as separate entities, as the traits of being tutored in magic, having relations with, and ultimately trapping Merlin are common traits of Morgan in Arthurian legend.

Many variations of the Arthurian legend, such as Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, feature multiple Ladies of the Lake, but they are considered one character in other variations.
