Profile
Origin
Excalibur is a sword wielded by Arthur in the Matter of Britain narrative cycle. Originally named Caledfwlch in Welsh and comparable to the sword Caladbolg from Irish mythology, the sword was given the Latin name Caliburnus by Geoffrey of Monmouth with his recounting of King Arthur's myth before being given the name Excalibur by later authors.
In the myth of King Arthur, Excalibur is buried within an anvil or a stone in later myths, with only one who is the child of Uther Pendragon being able to free the sword. When a young Arthur pulls Excalibur from its resting place, he proves he is the rightful heir of Uther. However in other accounts Arthur receives the sword later in life, after Arthur breaks the sword he withdrew from the anvil/stone in a duel with Pellinore, and upon the advice of Merlin Arthur travels to the lake of Nimue, Lady of the Lake, who gifts him Excalibur to replace the broken sword.
Excalibur is a powerful magic item, able to cut through steel with ease along with its scabbard healing whoever holds it from any wound. In an act of revenge against her brother, Morgan le Fey steals the scabbard from Arthur and throws it into the lake from which he received it, depriving him of its power and ensuring his death in the battle of Camlann. Upon being wounded in the battle, Arthur orders his knight Griflet to throw Excalibur into the lake of Nimue. Griflet hesitates, not wanting to discard a sword of such power, tries and fails to deceive Arthur twice into believing he followed the orders before finally throwing the sword into the lake where it is caught by Nimue, who then takes Arthur into Avalon where he rests until the country needs him once again.
Design
