Epilogue

Long before life existed on the Fifth Planet, gods wielded the powers of telepathy, teleportation, and telekinesis at their disposal. This supernatural power was called Gaia. In time, people began to harness these powers themselves, with those attaining mastery becoming known as Gaia Masters.

The Game Gear remaster greatly expands the epilogue with added details: Long ago, human-like entities descended onto the newly formed Fifth Planet, bringing with them substances that could amplify life called Orichalcum. The Orichalcum was strewn across the planet and spawned its plethora of life. In present times, an annual ritual came to be held at Mount Paro, where every 14-year old child would gather for one to be selected as the next Gaia Master Candidate. At one such ritual, El, Kishe, and Uranus were all selected and hereafter began their Gaia training over the next two years. At around the same time, the older Gaia Masters began to inexplicably disappear one by one.

Beginning

Two years ago, the Gaia Masters Michael and Lucifer had suddenly disappeared without a trace, following Michael's exile at the Council of the Gods.[1] In the Town of Moira, El has been training his Gaia under the guidance of his teacher, Zodia. Having finally graduated, El prepares to escort the next generation of Gaia trainees to Mount Paro at Zodia's discretion. Suddenly, the sky turns dark and waves of Beasts descend to attack the planet.[2] In the ensuing chaos, Zodia hurries ahead to rescue the children already gathered at Mount Paro. The townsfolk meanwhile beckon El to seek the priests' counsel at the Shrine of Lemuria where one of the four Orichalcum is guarded.

At Lemuria, El finds the shrine's priests and the three remaining Gaia Masters, Baal, Belial, and Mephisto, debating over whether to hand over the Orichalcum as ransom to the Beast at Mount Paro, who is holding the children there hostage.[3] The priests refuse to surrender the shrine's Orichalcum, whose power is necessary to sustain the planet, but the Gaia Masters insist that nothing else can be done to stop the Beasts. El also learns that a Beast has seized the nearby Town of Arrow with an impassable barrier of Gaia, which can only be dispelled with the Lethe Water found in the Oasis Cave south of Lemuria. El retrieves the Lethe Water and removes Arrow's barrier before slaying the Beast responsible, Jabber, thereby liberating the town.

The story in Lemuria and Arrow diverge between the original Game Boy release and the Game Gear remaster. In the Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions, El learns at Lemuria that Kishe had been wounded while attempting to fight a Beast, leaving him bedridden and in delirium. His mother asks El to visit the Town of Arrow's doctor and retrieve some Medicine for Kishe's injuries. Once saved, Kishe explains that he had been wounded by Upyr, the Beast at Mount Paro.[4]

In the Game Gear version, El reunites with Kishe at the town gates of Arrow, who had not seen each other since the ritual. Kishe attempted to fight Jabber alone, but failed and was injured in the battle. He commends El for defeating Jabber and reassures that he will be safe as he returns to Lemuria. However, when El later visits Kishe's residence, he learns that he still has yet to return. El finds Kishe back at Arrow with the town doctor, having collapsed outside of town on his way back to Lemuria.

In either version, Kishe decides to accompany El on his journey in combating the Beasts. The pair visit the Lemuria priests and are asked to save the children at Mount Paro, granting them passage to scale the mountain. This exchange is slightly expanded in the Game Gear remaster: a priest arrives to report that Zodia had been badly wounded at Mount Paro, having failed to rescue the children, and beseeches that the party go in Zodia's stead.

At the peak of Mount Paro, the party defeat Upyr and rescue the hostage children. The Lemuria priests ask El to investigate the Beasts' origins and motives. The party are given a Permit to cross the mountains through the Western Shrine. The Gaia Masters, however, sneer at the party's triumph and dismiss the investigation as a waste of time.

At the Lemuria inn, El finds a note left behind by Zodia, informing the reader that he has left on a journey to seek higher Gaia power and overcome his humiliation.[5]

When the party next sleep at an inn, El is visited by an angelic being. She warns him to not pursue Gaia, claiming that such power will only lead to great destruction by another power.

The Zord

Crossing the mountains, the party soon arrive at Harappa, where Uranus lives. The townsfolk and animals are in the uproar as Uranus had been abducted by an emergent group calling themselves the Zord, but their whereabouts are unknown. In the next town of Meluhha, rumors spread that the Zord are killing the Beasts.

The party travel to the southeastern continent via the connecting Hypnos Shrines. In Jhalawan, they meet Harta, a man who has allied himself with the Beasts and has been searching for a cure to their short lifespans.

At the Town of Ramū, El and Kishe learn that the shrine's Orichalcum had been stolen by the Beasts and taken to the Tower of Magan. The high priest Raphael, the father of Uranus, left to retrieve it but has since gone missing. The party climb the tower and rescue Raphael from the Minotaur, who had been holding Raphael captive. In gratitude for saving his life and Ramū's Orichalcum, Raphael gives El the Sol Ring, an artifact allowing the wearer to communicate with animals. As the party leave the shrine, they find that the Gaia Masters have gathered and claim they will protect the Orichalcum. One of the Gaia Masters also suspects that the Zord and Beasts may be connected.

Back in Harappa, with the Sol Ring now in the party's possession, they learn from the town animals that Uranus had been taken to the Zord's Den up north. One of the animals comment it had tried to follow Uranus's captors, but had lost sight of them when the group had disappeared inside the cave. The only clue left behind was a Black Key, which is entrusted to the party. El travels to the Zord's Den and uses the key to open a barricade disguised as a boulder. The party fight off waves of the Zord and locate Uranus being held captive by Buster. Freed from her captor, Uranus explains that the Zord are seeking Force, a power different from that of Gaia. However, she spares the party no gratitude, angry at El for slaying the Beasts. She returns to Harappa on her own and the party follow her. When they next reunite, Uranus comments she has heard the party are investigating the Beasts. She believes that the Beasts are not evil, and to prove this, decides to accompany the party thereafter. In the Game Gear remaster her reasons differ slightly: Uranus is still angry with El and chastises him that Gaia is meant to serve all living things. She decides then to follow the party to ascertain how they will make use of Gaia.

El, Kishe and Uranus travel next to the seaside town of Tilmun, located on the cape of the southeastern continent. Tilmun is home to a small shrine that houses the Boaz Staff (Jachin Staff in the Game Gear remaster), which was entrusted to the shrine's family by the Gaia Masters. The townsfolk are on high alert as the Zord have been seeking the Boaz Staff. Triton, the son of the shrine's priest, wants to marry his fiancée but is too anxious about the Boaz Staff to commit. Additionally, the priest has also barred the townsfolk from riding the town dolphins out of precaution.

When the party arrive at Tilmun after rescuing Uranus, they learn that Triton had taken the Boaz Staff and fled the town. Triton's fiancée confesses that the Zord are after him and that he had retreated to the small island east of Tilmun. The party share this information with Triton's mother and she arranges for a dolphin to ferry them to the island. Triton is found hiding in the island cave. However, he mistakenly believes the party to be the Zord and summons Orthrus to protect him. Orthrus is killed in the ensuing battle and Triton realizes his mistake after being told his mother had sent for him. He begs the party to save Orthrus, and they use a Rune to revive the fallen Beast. Triton decides to leave the Boaz Staff with the party and returns to Tilmun to marry his fiancée. His father also permits the party to take a dolphin to the southwestern continent across the sea, where the Zord Castle stands.

At the same time, the Tilmun blacksmith finishes an order received from Zodia. One of the smiths mention that Zodia was last seen heading for the Sage's Mountain. The party follow this tip, but find only a Crest that Zodia had left behind.

The party gain entry into the Zord Castle after passing off the Crest. There they finally reunite with Zodia. Zodia reveals that Raphael had been murdered and the Orichalcum stolen yet again. He tells the party to follow him before disappearing further into the castle. In the inner sanctum, Zodia confesses that he is the leader of the Zord and had founded the group to destroy the Beasts. He declares that the power of Gaia is absolute and sends his henchman Morgan to test the party's strength. Upon Morgan's death, Zodia claims that the Gaia Masters had killed Raphael and are responsible for the Beasts' emergence. He then tells the party to head for Atlantis, where the Gaia Masters are gathering for the Council of the Gods, before escaping the castle.

The angelic being once again visits El in his sleep. She implores El to seek Force, adding that true power will only be realized once Gaia and Force have combined.

Warring Factions

Heading westward, the party eventually find the Beasts' Nest, where many friendly yet wary Beasts have gathered. The Beasts are tired of all the fighting and desire a place where they can live in peace. The party also reunite with Harta here, who is still investigating the Beasts' short lifespans. He asks El if he could spare a couple Magnetite to feed the Beasts, and in gratitude for the exchange, bestows him the ability to speak with plants.

The party press onward and travel to the northwest continent via the connecting Hypnos Shrines, where they finally arrive at Atlantis. The Gaia Masters Baal and Belial have gathered at the shrine and deny any involvement with Raphael's death and the stolen Orichalcum, arguing that the Zord are responsible. The priests believe in the Gaia Masters' claims and request that the party assist them in defeating the Zord. The party also learn that Hiram, a man from the nearby town of Crotona, has locked himself away in the Atlantis hall and refuses to see any visitors.

As the party leave the shrine, the townsfolk begin panicking as Beasts infiltrate the Atlantis Sewers. The party make their way into the sewers, clashing with waves of Beasts along the way. Within the sewers, they locate a passageway leading back to town where they overhear Mephisto speaking with a horde of Beasts. Mephisto asks the Beasts if they were successful in taking the Orichalcum back to Terra and reminds them to never forget that it was the Gaia Masters who created them. Further into the passage, the party emerge in Hiram's room and discover that the man claiming himself to be Hiram is actually a Zord member. The man begs to be spared and confesses that the Zord had abducted Hiram and are holding him captive at the Town of Daro, another one of the Zord's bases. He surrenders the Prison Key before fleeing Atlantis.

When the party arrive at Daro, they discover that the shrine priests have infiltrated the hideout and slaughtered most of the Zord stationed there. The party free Hiram from his cell, who explains the Zord had kidnapped him to build them flying Arks. Hiram returns to Atlantis and informs the party he would be happy to build them an Ark in gratitude for saving him. With the Lapis from his wife in Crotona, Hiram begins to build his final Ark.

The party also meet a dying Zord member in Hiram's cell. Mistaking the party for his comrades, the man begs them to save everyone in the Zord Headquarters. He gives them the Bird, an item to be used at the stone circle far to the north to enter the base. In the Game Gear remaster, when the party hold up the Bird at the circle, they are whisked away to the Headquarters by a tornado.

In the Zord Headquarters, the party find that the priests have already invaded the base and a war between the Zord and Beasts have broken out. A member of the Zord claims he had witnessed the Gaia Masters unleash the Beasts, yet the priests suspect it to be the Zord's doing. At the end of the headquarters' corridor, the party once again reunite with Zodia. He concedes that the Zord are at an end, but remains determined to defeat the Gaia Masters and their leader Lucifer. He challenges the party to a battle and is subsequently defeated. Zodia commends El for surpassing him and implores him to defeat the Gaia Masters, reiterating that they are true masterminds behind the Beasts, before passing away. Suddenly the Gaia Masters emerge before the party to mock Zodia's death. Baal and Belial leave Mephisto to eliminate the party. Mephisto confirms that Raphael's death and the Beasts were their doing, and attacks the party to keep their secret safe, but is killed in the ensuing battle. The party leave the headquarters afterward.

When the party next stay at an inn, the angelic being visits El a third time. She encourages him to have faith in the many friends he has made on his journey, including the Beasts who have allied with him. She again reminds him to seek Force and cryptically clues that the Gaia Master Michael will lead the way.

Back at Atlantis, Hiram finishes his Ark and entrusts it to the party.

Seeking Force

Traveling around the world aboard the Ark, the party land at a Sage Shrine and find a mortally wounded sage there, who begs them for a Rune. The saved sage explains he had been attacked by Mephisto, claiming that the Gaia Master has revived and turned into a Beast. He believes that the only way to defeat Mephisto is with the power of Force and advises the party to speak with the trees for guidance.

At the Beasts' Nest, El speaks with the Tree of Life using the power that Harta bestowed him, and learns that Harta is in actuality Michael. The tree instructs the party to return to Ramū and collect the Drop of Light from its sacred tree. Ramū's tree acknowledges El as a Gaia Master enlightened by Force and tells him to bring the Drop of Light to a lake in the center of the planet. There the Drop of Light teleports the party to Nova Ramū, a hidden sanctuary where Beasts and animals have gathered to leave the warring behind. Michael has also retreated to this place as well.

Within Nova Ramū, the party finally meet the Goddess of Force, the angelic being who had visited El several times. She commends the party reaching Nova Ramū and declares that the harmony of Gaia and Force will make the universe shine once more. She teaches El the ability of Force and assures that she will always be watching over him.

At another Sage Shrine, the revived Mephisto appears before the party as a Beast, explaining that he had eaten a Beast to come back alive. Whether or not El had learned Force, Mephisto is once again destroyed in the ensuing battle.

Terra

Using the Ark, the party fly over the northwest continent's mountains and find a petrogylph in the center. As they fly over the petrogylph, the Ark is instantly transported to the far depths of space. Belial crashes his Ark into the party's Ark to stop their advance, swearing that he will never surrender Orichalcum. Belial is killed in the battle and the party's Ark continues to fly through space undeterred until it reaches the newly formed planet, Terra. Lucifer has built his stronghold Luciferium here.

The party climb Luciferium and are confronted by Baal along the way. Baal confirms the Beasts were created by the Gaia Masters and that they intend to become Terra's gods with the Orichalcum. Baal is defeated and, in his dying breath, expresses his regret that El does not understand the joy they felt at creating the first Beast.

El and the party face Lucifer at Luciferium's peak, where the four Orichalcum have been taken. Lucifer explains that it was the Gaia Masters' power that had formed Terra's landmass and the Beasts. He affirms that the Beasts need the Orichalcum to stay alive and refuses to abandon them. Lucifer engages the party in battle and is subsequently defeated. He implores El to take care of the Beasts before dying.

In the Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions, the party retrieve the Orichalcum and return them to their shrines on the Fifth Planet. The Goddess of Force appears again and reassures El and the party that the fighting has finally come to an end. However, she cautions that with the powers of Gaia and Force now combined, a new world shall soon be created and that the Fifth Planet shall in turn meet its end.

Game Gear-exclusive

The game's ending is significantly changed and expanded in the Game Gear remaster. Upon Lucifer's defeat, a fierce tremor reverberates through Luciferium and Kishe notices the Orichalcum turn a bright red. El, Kishe and Uranus then receive a vision of the Fifth Planet and, to their horror, witness its sudden demise as the planet turns red. The Goddess of Force appears before the party and explains that the Orichalcum has resonated with Lucifer's Gaia, consequently bringing their homeworld to an end. However, she tells El not to despair, as all things will inevitably come to an end. She then entrusts El, Kishe, and Uranus with a new task: to lay down the foundations of a new civilization on Terra. She also teaches El the Cogitoergos skill with the instruction to cast it "at the end of the world." The Goddess lastly reminds the party to never forget their homeworld's history before sealing herself away along with Luciferium, to emerge again when they are needed in the new era. The Ark subsequently also fades away.

When the party step into Terra's petrogylph, they are transported to the planet's moon where they encounter a lone monolith. The monolith teleports them to the Monolith Labyrinth, where a voice claiming to be the Lord of All Creation swears it will not allow the party to create a new world. The voice challenges the party to make their way through the labyrinth and overcome the universe's memories.

As the party make their way through the labyrinth, they face numerous entities along the way, each one recounting their interpretations of the universe's history: In the beginning, there was a receptacle of light. The Lord of All Creation broke the receptacle and filled the universe with light. The concept of the 'Word' was subsequently born and the scattered light had hid itself inside of the Word. From the Word, all the languages came to be and the distinction between 'one's self' and 'others' followed. The 'Letter' was then born to serve after the Word, which chronicled the people's wisdom into written records. 'Truth' was born from these books and any book that did not convey the perceived Truth was destroyed. Consequently, conflicts arose over differing interpretations of the Word and Truth, which in turn led to 'Death'. Mankind also brought forth the concept of Gods and thought of themselves as different, freeing themselves from the divine will yet subjecting them to the limitations of their own power. Humanity began to seek intelligence to enrich their lives, yet became locked in an intelligence race.

Toward the end of the labyrinth, the party are sealed in a chamber where they encounter Rashaverak, the Lord of All Creation. Rashaverak claims he had created the Fifth Planet and bestowed the Gaia Masters' wisdom. Rashaverak felt threatened by the existence of Force and thus created Gaia to combine the two powers, but had failed as the power of Force remained. Rashaverak states that it was because of Force that the party's lives were spared and thus he had led them to the Monolith Labyrinth to destroy them. The party defeat Rashaverak in the ensuing battle, but are warned that humanity have always been manipulated by an outside influence. Rashaverak allows them to proceed ahead, but wonders if they are not being manipulated even now.

Beyond Rashaverak's chamber, El steps into the center of five pentacles. As he does so, the Universal Consciousness appears before the party. The entity claims that the party and it are intrinsically tied together and are fated to destroy one another. In the battle, the party find their attacks unable to penetrate the Universal Consciousness's defenses. El casts the Cogitoergos skill, whereupon he dies as the Universal Consciousness is bathed in red light and becomes vulnerable to the party's attacks. The entity is eventually defeated and it concedes to the party. Yet, the Universal Consciousness reminds them that their victory will not last forever, adding that countless worlds are dying from conflicts at the same time that new worlds are being born. It swears they will meet again as time repeats itself.

El slips away from Kishe and Uranus's grasp as the pair are teleported outside of the Monolith Labyrinth and back to Terra. El comments that their homeworld's history has ended, but fate has allowed his companions to live on as the ones who will build a new civilization. Kishe and Uranus observe the moon from the shores of Terra and realize the reality of the situation. As the sun rises, Uranus accepts that Terra shall now be their new homeworld. The Goddess of Force appears before the pair and reassures them that the fighting is now finally over. She encourages them to build their new destiny, even if it is fraught with more tragedy.
