Profile

Origin

Cat-sìth (IPA: /ˈkʰaht̪ ˈʃiː/, plural cait-shìth) is a fey from Gaelic mythology, primarily Scottish though also appearing in Irish myth, that takes the appearance of a black cat with a tuft of white fur on their chest that stands on its hind legs. While considered a fey creature, it is also said that it is a witch that can take the form of a cat up to nine times, with the witch being trapped in the cat form upon their ninth transformation. A cat-sìth is said to be able to steal a person's soul after they had died, requiring families to protect the recently deceased from any cats. However they were also said to bring good luck if they were given a plate of milk around the time of the Samhain festival.

Design

Illustration of Puss in Boots by Gustave Doré

Cait Sith resembles the Puss in Boots, a European fairy tale creature. The creature is typically depicted as a bipedal cat wearing a hat with a feather, a cape, a sword, and large boots. This look was popularized by French illustrator Gustave Doré's depiction of the creature in Les Contes de Perrault, a collection of fairy tales released in 1862.

Shin Megami Tensei V

A fae beast from the Scottish highlands whose kingdoms can be found in tree hollows or abandoned houses.

Dog-sized, they have white tufts of hair on their chest, green, intelligent eyes, and are even capable of understanding the human language. Though they usually stick to their territory, some have been known to live with humans as normal black cats. They are generally peaceful, but should a human treat one poorly, they will forcibly take that human to their kingdom.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2

Cat spirits from the Scottish highlands whose kingdoms can be found in hollowed trees or abandoned houses. They possess green, intelligent eyes, and are said to understand human speech. Cait means "cat" and Sith means "spirit," so Cait Sith are often depicted as black cats.

Devil Survivor: Overclocked

A cat fairy of the highlands of Scotland, said to have their own kingdom inside hollow trees and deserted houses. They are about the size of dogs and covered in black fur, except for their white chests. Their green eyes shine with intelligence, and they can understand human speech. They normally live in the kingdom, but there are times when they live amongst people as normal black cats. They are relatively gentle fairies, but when a person torments a cat, the offending human is dragged off to Cait Sith's kingdom.

Nomenclature

Cait Sith's name is a misspelling of the Scottish Gaelic cat sìth (literally "fairy cat"), using the plural cait instead of the singular cat.

The name from Revelations: Persona, "Muskat", probably comes from "musketeer" and "cat".
