Asp is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Asp[a] is an old word referring to venomous snakes, especially those found in Egypt. Cleopatra VII of the Ptolemaic dynasty was reported to have killed herself by having an asp bite her; in this case, the asp most likely referred to the Egyptian cobra. Plutarch relays this in his Parallel Lives, though he is skeptical of the account and mentions an alternative story of her use of a hollow implement (κνηστίδι κοίλῃ) kept in her hair, often interpreted as a hairpin or comb, though he says that the asp story seems to be what Caesar Augustus believed.[1]

Design

Asp resembles a cobra with the Eyes of Horus and Ra on its hood.

見たもの全てを眠らせるアスプの視線は、この蛇を死の蛇に変えた。視線だけで敵は殺せなかったが、眠った相手を毒牙にかければ何の問題もなかった。

アスプは雄と雌が常につがいになって暮らす、情愛の強い蛇だと伝えられる。もしも一方が他の動物に殺されたなら、もう一方が必ず復讐したという。

現在では、エジプトコブラのことをアスプという。

A venomous snake that possesses a mysterious gaze which puts anyone who looks into its eyes to sleep.

The gaze of the asp, which put everything it saw to sleep, transformed this snake into a serpent of death. The gaze itself could not kill its enemy, but it was no problem to use its venomous fangs on the sleeping opponent.

Asps are reported to be snakes with a strong sense of affection, always living together in pairs of male and female. If one were to be killed by another animal, it is said the other would invariably take its revenge.

In the present day, the Egyptian cobra is called the asp.

Devil Survivor 2

A mysterious venomous snake that can put its victim to sleep with its gaze alone.

Known as the serpent of death, it lulls its victims to sleep allowing it to deliver the fatal bite at will. Because male and female asps always live in pairs, it can be said to be an affectionate snake. If one of them is killed, the other will come for revenge. Egyptian cobras are currently known as asps.
