The Diamond Realm is a location in the Megami Tensei franchise. It is an ethereal labyrinth governed by En no Ozuno.

History

Origin

The Diamond Realm, called वज्रधातु Vajradhātuor (Vajradhatu) in Sanskrit, is a metaphysical plane and central concept in Vajrayana Buddhism associated with the discipline of Vairocana Buddha. This plane is depicted as a mandala (geometrical cosmic map) filled with deities and other symbols, illustrating the interconnectedness of all phenomena. The Vajradhatu Mandala serves as a guide for practitioners who seek to understand the nature of reality. Teachings of Vajradhatu are more commonly seen in Japanese Buddhist schools, specifically Shingon and Tendai Buddhism, in which it is known as 金剛界 Kongōkai.

Regardless of if the Hero sides with the American ambassador Thorman or defeats him, Thorman will declare that several ICBMs have been launched towards Tokyo in an effort to eradicate the Demons from the Expanse. To ensure the Hero's safety, the Heroine transports him to the Diamond Realm where he is woken up by En no Ozuno. He orders the Hero to reunite with the Law Hero and Chaos Hero, as they were also transported there. Exploring the labyrinth, the Hero reunites with his companions from Tokyo and brings them to En no Ozuno, who gives them a brief explanation of the Diamond Realm. En no Ozuno then informs them that Tokyo was completely destroyed in the ICBM attack, which quickly unraveled into worldwide nuclear carnage. He promises to return the three heroes to Tokyo, even though society has collapsed, but asks they bring him Soma from a nearby spring first. The Hero fetches Soma twice for En no Ozuno, and is then ordered to meet with Phantoms elsewhere in the realm, who either gift him a weapon if he shares their alignment, or attack him if he does not. With these labors fulfilled, En no Ozuno permits the Hero and his partners to leave the Diamond Realm, but not before one last fight against Zenki and Goki. Afterwards, the group is warped back to the mortal plane, emerging in a devastated, barren Tokyo 30 years in the future.

End of spoilers.

Shin Megami Tensei II

The Diamond Realm is unlocked if a save file from before the Megiddo Ark is entered and loaded after finishing the game. Just outside of Shinjuku, a man can be found who briefly mentions the main heroes of Shin Megami Tensei before offering to send the party to the Diamond Realm. In it, En no Ozuno can be found, along with multiple NPCs related to the Gods of Yamato, such as Hiruko, Izanami, and Amaterasu. If Aleph freed all of the imprisoned Amatsukami in Sealed Iwato, they will appear as enemy encounters in the Diamond Realm, otherwise, the enemies will just be an assortment of enemies encountered on the world map.

There are sections of the Diamond Realm locked behind stat requirements and Alignment, which are Ichigaya, Government Office, Imperial Palace, Tokyo Tower, and a room with a drastically increased Fiend encounter rate. The requirements to enter each location is listed below:

Location Requirements
Tokyo Tower Alignment must be Law and have a minimum of 25 points in the Magic stat.
Ichigaya Alignment must be Chaos and have a minimum of 25 points in the Stamina stat.
Imperial Palace Alignment must be Neutral and have a minimum of 25 points in the Intelligence stat.
Government Office Dungeon is entered through any of the previous dungeons. If entering from Tokyo Tower, Aleph must have a minimum of 30 points in Speed. If entering from Ichigaya, Aleph must have a minimum of 30 points in Strength. And if entering from Imperial Palace, Aleph must have a minimum of 30 points in Luck.
Fiend room Must have a minimum of 25 points in Luck.

For stat requirements, only Aleph's base stats are counted; Any additional points from gems or equipment are not recognized.

Colosseum Mode

Exclusive to the Gameboy Advance and iOS versions of Shin Megami Tensei II, a new mode can be accessed through the Diamond Realm called "Colosseum Mode".

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

This location appears as part of the Challenge Quest "Messiahs in the Diamond Realm", taking place after Nanashi chooses his own path.

Upon awaking in the Diamond Realm, Nanashi is greeted by En no Ozuno, whom he had previously met in Twisted Tokyo, and is urged to speak with Stephen outside. In doing so, Stephen explains that he had called four other messiahs to the Diamond Realm, each having died in their native worlds as a result of YHVH's machinations. He shows Nanashi the soul of one such messiah, one who died when ICBMs annihilated Tokyo and had its cycle of reincarnation broken by YHVH. The three other messiahs met similar fates, so Stephen implores Nanashi to help restore their bodies and guide them to their native worlds.

One by one, Nanashi assists Aleph, Demi-fiend, and Flynn, all of whom learn why they were brought to the Diamond Realm. With all but one of the messiahs reunited, Nanashi returns to Stephen, and he once again presents the soul in his care, revealed to be the Hero's. Stephen then links the Hero's soul with Nanashi, stating it needs power and sensation to regain its original form. A fight ensues between Nanashi and Stephen, after which the Hero's body regenerates. Despite the Hero remembering his purpose, Stephen says that his request to Nanashi has not been completed yet. Stephen stands out of his wheelchair, proclaiming he defied the universe's order to extend his salvation to the five messiahs, for he believes humans are capable of exceeding the Axiom that dictates all reality. The four messiahs accompany Nanashi in yet another fight against Stephen, who upon defeat, disappears from the Diamond Realm. With their mission complete, the five messiahs part ways, stepping into a portal that sends them to their native worlds.
