Asura, also known as Ashura, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Asuras are powerful semi-divine beings that appear in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Dharmic religions. They are usually depicted as passionate and warlike, although their morality varies heavily in different religions, schools, and legends.
The Asura depicted in the Megami Tensei series is sometimes based on the Asurendra, or Asura-lords of Buddhism. The four Asurendra are the most powerful of the Asuras, and each rules over one of the Asura tribes. The Sanskrit word Asura is cognate to the Avestan word 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 ahura (lord), which forms part of the name of Ahura Mazda (which means "lord of wisdom"); this is referenced in several Megami Tensei games.
