Profile
Origin
Beelzebub (Hebrew: בַּעַל זְבוּב baʿal zăḇûḇ), also called Beelzebul (Greek: Βεελζεβοὺλ Beelzeboúl), is an Ekronite god according to the book of 2 Kings in the Bible. By the Second Temple period, Beelzebub/Beelzebul was considered the prince of demons by Jews, which is recorded in the Testament of Solomon and in the Synoptic Gospels. Opinions differ on which form of the name was the original; Beelzebub (meaning "lord of flies") may be a derogatory alteration of Beelzebul if the latter is interpreted as בַּעַל זְבֻל baʿal zăḇūl, meaning "lord of the high place," or Beelzebub may be the original form and Beelzebul is an alteration to resemble זֶבֶל zeḇel, meaning "dung."
