It was developed and published by Atlus and released on July 13, 2006 in Japan, and on August 14, 2007 in North America. In South Korea, the game released on December 21, 2006. In Europe and Australia, the game was released on February 29 and on March 6 in 2008, respectively.

A remaster of the game for the PlayStation 2, titled Lua error in Module:Link at line 60: attempt to index global 'link' (a nil value)., was released in 2007, featuring a new epilogue titled The Answer. A second remaster for the PlayStation Portable, Persona 3 Portable, was released in 2009, which implemented point-and-click navigation and introduced a female protagonist option. A full remake, titled Persona 3 Reload, will be released in early 2024.
