According to Masayuki Doi, Hydra's design intentionally deviates from common depictions in other media. The symbols and patterns on Hydra's body were inspired by those painted on ancient Greek pottery. Hydra's eyeless, mask-like face came from common stories in Greek mythology where he would blindly ransack villages. The drool and poisonous gas that spread from his mouth in-game were meant to make him appear more menacing.
