Shin Megami Tensei:
Synopsis
While searching through their school's library, students Jin, Akira, and Rena discover a Demon encyclopedia thought to have been written by the occult. Rena explains that Demons coexist with humans in an imaginary world called Valhalla, then takes notice of an incantation written in the encyclopedia. As the three students recite the incantation, time freezes, and a shrine maiden named Ami summons them to a desolate Valhalla. Ami pleads for Jin and Akira, whom she claims are the Son of Light and Prince of Darkness, to save Valhalla with their latent abilities, as the world was ruined by the evil Imperial Army. Malicious Demons suddenly appear and attempt to take special artifacts from Ami, until Jin and Akira fight back using gun-like Devilisers to summon the Demons Rand and Gale. With their new partners, Jin, Akira, Rena, and Ami embark on a journey to save Valhalla from annihilation and find a way back home.

Jin, Akira, and Rena happen upon a book of Demons in their school's library, which also tells of a world of called Valhalla. Chanting a spell, time in the kids' world suddenly freezes, and they are beckoned by Ami Kashihara to Valhalla, left barren by the Imperial Army. Ami tells Jin and Akira that they are the reincarnations of Valhalla's creators, the Son of Light and Prince of Dark, making them Devil Children. During a sudden fight against Gargoyles, the boys are joined by Rand and Gale and equipped with Demon-summoning Devilisers. Afterwards, the group set off to find a way to save Valhalla and unfreeze time in their world.
Jin and Akira are provided a Time Key and Time Chain by Ami, items which when activated can control the chronology of Valhalla. Ami believes that by awakening to their powers, the boys can command the Time Chain, and rewrite history to bring Valhalla back to an era of peace. A horde of Behemoths attack the group and kidnap Ami, after which she learns their ruler Azrael seeks to use the Time Chain. Jin and Akira find Ami and fight the Behemoths; although Rena is reluctant to join, instead wanting to return to the human world, she helps by scanning the Demons' weak points with her Vinecom. Unfortunately, a Behemoth's misfire hits Ami's Time Key, causing the Time Chain to scatter across the world. As the group embark on their journey to find the chain pieces, Emperor Azrael, from his throne, eagerly wonders how they intent to rewrite history.
While on the hunt for a nearby Chain piece, the group happen upon a fortress belonging to the Imperial Army, which was built over a village of humans enslaved by a Barbatos slither. Jin and Rand try fighting the Barbatos, but get captured and locked inside the fortress. Akira leads the others through a tunnel to the fortress, to which they are ambushed, so Gale sacrifices himself to ensure the others' escape. Sustaining minor injuries, Akira proclaims it is his turn to protect Gale. Meanwhile, Jin, Rand, and Gale manage to sneak out of prison and take Jin's Deviliser back from the Barbatos's boss, but nearly fall from the fortress's roof. Luckily, Akira soars in on a makeshift paraglider, and he and Jin power up their partners to defeat the Barbatos.
As the team proceed to Flower Town, where a Time Chain piece is supposedly located, a Demon of the Imperial Army named Harborim commences a pursuit against them. Meanwhile, Rena bickers with Jin about being dragged into this journey against her will, and that unlike him and Akira, she is not a Devil Child. Finding a phony Time Chain along the way, the team are lead to a chain market, but their search is for naught. Returning to the market the next day, Harborim holds Rena hostage, revealing the market to have been a set-up. Jin and Akira manage to defeat Harborim and claim his ring, which turns out to be a piece of the Time Chain.
When a Time Chain piece is detected across the sea, the team arrive at a port town, where a man named Zabel explains that an undersea tunnel is being dug. However, the volcanic terrain makes the tunnels hard to cross. A squadron of Balor then sail in, to which the team plan to sneak onto their ship in order to reach the neighboring continent. Jin and Rand's covers are blown, resulting in their persecution by the Balor squadron. Retreating to the undersea tunnel, they encounter Zabel and the ice Demon Issitoq, offering to help him drill to the other continent. Zabel is content on drilling, despite being under volcanic terrain; his ill daughter died after the Balors denied them access to a ship, as the closest hospital was overseas. Regaining his confidence from Jin, Zabel and Issitoq resume drilling and emerge on the other continent, reuniting Jin with Akira and the others. Rand and Gale defeat the Balors, to the villagers' delight, and Issitoq parts ways with Zabel.
While struck with hunger, the group proceed to a pillar of smoke where a village may be. Along the way, they find Issitoq basking in a green light conjured by a dragon. Jin presumes the dragon to be a foe and punches it, revealing it to be a costume piloted by several Leprechauns, who quickly disband. Arriving at the village, Old Geppetto informs the group that the Leprechauns' light protected it from the Imperial Army. Feeling guilty for scaring them away earlier, Jin sets out to find the Leprechauns. Rena follows and falls into an sinkhole, while the Demon Anzu attacks the unprotected village. As Akira, Gale, and the villagers fight Anzu, the Leprechauns find Rena in the watery pit; Issitoq retrieves her Vinecom and goes searching with Jin and Rand. Before Rena succumbs to hypothermia, recalling a childhood memory wherein Jin saved her from drowning in a river, Jin and the Leprechauns hoist her up with a pulley mechanism. The group defeat Anzu, after which the Leprechauns envelop the village in light and vanish, confident the people will be safe from the Imperial Army.
The team arrive at a dried-up lake encompassing a treetop village, whose inhabitants rely on Isssitoq to stave off the heat. A feud then breaks out between the village chief and his son, the latter leaving the village alongside his siblings and Issitoq. As for the group, they learn the Imperial Army built a floodgate that cuts off the village's water, which is managed by Garm. The team successfully fights off Garm with the help of the chief's son and Issitoq, bringing water back to the treetop village.
The group battle Daidarabotchi after he ravages an old couples' house. Following their victory, Jin rudely disregards Rena's contributions to the team, making her deeply upset. While visiting a carnival in Hermit Village, Rena runs off and meets Mad Hatter, a stage-frightened Demon. Rena then attends Mad Hatter's magic show, but after it goes horribly, she visits him and watches him practice, reminding her of when she practiced baseball with little brother. Later on, Rena's frustration causes her to snap at Mad Hatter, to which he runs away, much like how Rena's brother did. During her search, she is captured by Daidarabotchi, until Mad Hatter comes to her rescue and makes amends. They work together to scare Daidarabotchi off for good, and the next day, Mad Hatter performs his magic show perfectly.
During a severe thunderstorm, Jin and Reo take shelter under the Chorus Tree, but are blinded by a lightning strike. A girl named Athena emerges from the light and seems familiar with the land, but does not recall the Chorus Tree having ever been grown. She possesses the last Chorus Tree seed and ancient currency, to which Ogma deduces that Athena came from 300 years in the past. After Ami and Skuld agree to find a way to send Athena back in time, she talks with Jin in a field, reflecting on how desolate the land was in the past. Athena and her father had tried growing Chorus Trees to nurture the land, though all of their attempts failed, and her father eventually died. She explores the field with Jin, who gifts her a four-leaf clover. Meanwhile, Ogma sees the Chorus Tree wither, the result of a time paradox. Athena refuses to return to her barren home, so Ogma abducts her at night and brings her to a Time Hole out of fear that history itself is in danger. Jin supports Athena's decision, but as the land and Hermit Village slowly wither away, she chooses to enter the Time Hole while carrying Jin's clover. In doing so, the land flourishes again, and Jin finds a clover engraved on the Chorus Tree.
The group are brought to Clotho, a cheerful woman who teaches the local children how to knit, in hopes of finding another Time Chain piece. However, as Rena pulls up Clotho's data on the Vinecom, it depicts her with a different form. As Jin plays with the children, a couple of them run up on an unstable cliff that begin to collapse. Luckily, Rand and Gale rush in to save them. Rena notices Clotho channel power from a gem on her chest, but before she can question it, Jin realizes some children are missing. Everyone goes searching for them, allowing Rena to show the boys Clotho's true form. Elsewhere, Clotho runs into Tamonten of the Imperial Army, who addresses her as a defected commander. Clotho explains her past to the team afterwards, having once worked under Azrael until she realized the harm she was causing. Tamonten returns with more soldiers and attacks the group, causing a sudden landslide. Coming to terms with her past, Clotho unleashes her powers to shield everyone and strike Tamonten's allies, giving Jin and Akira a chance to vanquish them. Clotho chooses to abandon the children now that they know her secret, but to her surprise, they present her with the scarves she taught them to knit. She decides to stay with the children and walks with them to the village, while the team resume their journey.
Having difficulty locating the next Time Chain piece, the group run into Rangda and are directed to a village close by. Rena is suspicious of Rangda, but the Demon plays innocent. Suddenly, they are swarmed by a school of Skyfish, so Akira calls for Gale and Skuld to fight them. At the village, they visit a man holding a glowing tanuki statue, which Rangda believed was a chain piece. Rena and Skuld chastise Rangda for her mistake, causing her to cry. Overcome with a headache, Jin's head sprouts a flower because he ate a strange fruit earlier, making him gravely weak. Ami and Rena stay with him while the others search for a cure, running into the Skyfish along the way.
