Profile

Origin

the Mad Hatter is a character in Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, first introduced in the Chapter 7, "A Mad Tea-Party." After Alice encounters the Mad Hatter having tea with the March Hare and others, she is welcomed into their chaotic tea party. The attendees constantly move about the table, conversations turn in unpredictable directions, and the Hatter gets frustrated over a broken watch. It is soon revealed the Hatter was nearly executed by the Queen of Hearts for his bad singing, but after narrowly escaping, he and his companions found themselves in a perpetual state of teatime.

It is believed that the Mad Hatter was inspired by the phrase "mad as a hatter." Between the 18th and 19th centuries, hatters in Stockport, Carroll's hometown, used mercury nitrate to treat felt, which resulted in severe mercury poisoning, erratic behavior, and neurological damage.

Design

Mad Hatter is a stout goblin-like humanoid wearing a purple magician's suit, gray pants, and red dress shoes. It holds out its magic hat, which produces confetti, as well as a large red glove that punches it in the face.
