Profile

Origin

Gargoyles are stone creatures often seen perched atop austere architecture, specifically that of the Gothic period in 12th-century Europe. Their name is derived from the French word gargouille meaning "throat," referring to their primary practical use as waterspouts which channel and divert rainwater from buildings, thus keeping them safe from water damage. Outside of their practicality, gargoyles are believed to represent sin and the need for the church's guidance, and that they can ward off evil spirits with their intimidating appearances.
