Synopsis
Synopsis
Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker is split into two different scenarios: the battle against the Septentriones (Septentrione arc) and the battle against the Triangulum (Triangulum arc). The Septentrione arc contains the original Devil Survivor 2 story from the DS original while the Triangulum arc contains new content that builds off of an alternate conclusion to the Septentrione arc.

In an alternate reality from the playable Septentrione arc, the protagonist was able to unite Daichi Shijima, Yamato Hotsuin, and Ronaldo Kuriki's factions against Polaris to regress the world with Al Saiduq's help. However, after waking up in the new world with his memories of the Septentrione invasion intact, the protagonist and his friends are caught up in another disaster. There, they find a familiar, albeit new threat—one of the Triangulum—now looming over the skies of Tokyo.

Septentrione Arc

Main section: Devil Survivor 2 § Synopsis

Triangulum Arc

In an alternate reality from the playable Septentrione arc, the protagonist was able to unite Daichi Shijima, Yamato Hotsuin, and Ronaldo Kuriki's factions against Polaris to regress the world with Al Saiduq's help. However, after waking up in the new world with his memories of the Septentrione invasion intact, the protagonist and his friends are caught up in another disaster. There, they find a familiar, albeit new threat—one of the Triangulum—now looming over the skies of Tokyo.

Gameplay Changes

  • A new arc taking place after the original story concerning a new threat, the Triangulum, has been added, sporting enough content to be considered a second full game.
    • When creating a new game, players can choose between starting at the Triangulum arc or at the original Septentrione arc.
    • The Triangulum arc takes place after an ending that cannot be achieved in the normal Septentrione campaign. This ending resembles a combination of the Kingmaker, Restorer, and Liberator endings.
    • A new character, Miyako Hotsuin, three unique endings, one bad ending, new bosses, a new secret boss, and new character events/stories have been added to the Triangulum arc.
    • New tracks have been added for the title screen and Triangulum arc, composed by Shoji Meguro.
  • New demons, skills, passives, and auto-skills have been added.
    • Skills exclusively found in the Triangulum arc can be used in the Septentrione arc if the player chooses to carry skill cracks over with New Game+.
  • Full voice acting has been added for all non-battle cutscenes, including voices for generic NPCs.
    • In the Japanese version, NPCs encountered in Osaka and Nagoya talk in their regional dialects.[1][2]
  • A fast-forward/dialogue skip button (accessed by pressing R+Y during cutscenes) has been added. (Players will still need to choose dialogue options while skipping through dialogue.)
  • There are two difficulty options available: "Blessed" and "Apocalypse".
    • "Blessed" is intended as an easy mode for players unfamiliar with strategy RPGs. It increases damage inflicted, reduces damage taken, increases the amount of EXP and Macca received, and grants the ability to restart the battle while carrying over everything received before dying.[3]
    • "Apocalypse" maintains the difficulty present in the DS original.
    • Difficulty does not affect events in the story, and can be changed at any time through the in-game Config menu.
  • More save data slots have been added.
  • Some cutscenes in the original Septentrione arc have had their visuals enhanced or retouched, such as certain scenes sporting 3D effects or new art. The English localization script has also been updated.
    • Other than this and the changes listed above, the story and gameplay of the Septentrione arc has remained untouched.
  • Various DLC has been added through the Nintendo eShop and through the 3DS's SpotPass function. (see: Downloadable Content)
  • A new opening movie has been added, replacing the original DS opening.

Following the game's launch, several downloadable content packs were made available, released from May 5 to May 19, 2015 in North America.[4][5] As of the Nintendo 3DS eShop's closure on March 27, 2023, it is no longer possible to purchase or download the game's downloadable content.[6]

These packs were made available again in weekly cycles starting from April 8, 2015 until June 26, 2019.[9] A limited-time Durarara!! SpotPass pack was also released in three parts in Japan, with each of the three characters made available for three to four day increments from January 29, 2015 to February 18, 2015 and redistributed two more times in March 2015. Development

Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker experienced three major delays before release. The game was first teased on March 2, 2013 at a sneak preview for Devil Survivor 2 The Animation under its Japanese title Devil Survivor 2: Break Record with a release expected during Summer 2013.[13][14] An issue of Weekly Famitsu released on March 28, 2013 later confirmed the release date to be July 11, 2013.[15] One month after this announcement, the game was delayed to Fall 2013 before being delayed again in October 2013 to 2014, with ATLUS commenting that it needed further polish and quality assurance before release.[16][17] Later, on September 20, 2014, a presentation at Tokyo Game Show announced that the game would launch on January 29, 2015 in Japan.[18]

On December 10, 2014, ATLUS U.S.A. announced that the game would be released in North America under the title Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker for $49.99, citing a release date sometime in early 2015. The English version would also include a full English dub and relocalized dialogue.[19] In February 2015, the North American version's release date was set to May 5, 2015.[20]

NIS America later announced that they would be handling distributing the game both physically and digitally in Europe.[21] In late May 2015, the European release date was announced for September 11, 2015.[22]
