Chizuko Nagao is a character in Persona 5: The Phantom X. Her cognitive presence was given the code name Vino.

Profile

Chizuko is a 75-year-old woman who frequents bars and clubs and has a penchant for drinking alcohol. Her favorite type of alcohol is ice wine with a side of prosciutto or cheese, and she enjoys ordering specials to hear the bartender explain the decisions behind the drink. She has an unseen husband and several unseen siblings. She is the guardian of her granddaughter Manaka Nagao following her parents' death. At the time of Persona 5: The Phantom X, Chizuko drinks heavily to cope with the stress and feeling of helplessness she acquired following Manaka's attempted suicide. Despite this, her primary concern is caring for her granddaughter and supporting her, even being willing to resort to physical violence and threats when Manaka is harassed by a stranger; in contrast, other situations do not invigorate her as strongly and she is able to keep a relatively calm attitude.

In the past, Chizuko played the saxophone regularly, having been taught by her then-future husband at a jazz café. After her granddaughter was born and expressed an interest singing, she would often perform duets with her; however, by the time Nagisa meets her, she has fallen out of practice. Her vision is poor because her left eye has gone bad. According to Chizuko, she is able to see better in low light conditions.

In the real world, Chizuko has short grey hair and often wears tinted orange sunglasses, yellow hoop earrings, and a brown neck scarf with a pattern resembling mushrooms or umbrellas. As a Phantom Idol, Vino wears a short blue jacket with a flared collar overtop a tactical bodysuit. Additionally, she has an eyepatch covering her poor eye and much longer hair than her real-world counterpart, now reaching down to her waist; an official ask-anything response states that this was the length she kept her hair at before Manaka was born.

Nagisa Kamisiro first meets Chizuko in Shinjuku during the Mission A Heartfelt Message: Part 1 after she gives him directions to the nearby station; however, after a drunkard starts to harass Nagisa along the way, she intervenes to rescue him. Taking a liking to him and with Lufel curious about her repressed desires, they stop inside of a minor-friendly bar for some friendly chat. Afterwards, they exchange contact information and walks him back to the station.

The next day, she invites Nagisa back to the bar only to be found asleep, revealing that she herself is a heavy drinker in part because of her anxieties and self-loathing regarding her inability to help her granddaughter Manaka, who had recently attempted suicide. After some discussion and encouragement from Nagisa, she realizes that she is running away from the situation and decides to invite Manaka to the bar's upcoming open mic night, with hopes that she can sing while her grandmother supports her on the saxophone. Motivated, she asks for Nagisa's presence when the time comes to provide support and bids him farewell.

During A Heartfelt Message: Part 2, Chizuko invites Nagisa to meet up with her in Inokashira Park, where she plays the saxophone for him and Manaka, though her performance is poor. After an encore and a brief interlude to get refreshments for her audience of two, Nagisa suggests the open mic night, and to Chizuko's surprise and joy, Manaka agrees. Deciding to stop drinking in order to focus on relearning the saxophone after sharing a tender moment, she bids farewell to Nagisa for the day; later, she contacts him to meet up at Jazz Jin for the performance. After Chizuko and Manaka perform together, they are accosted by a stranger who Manaka realizes is one of her harassers, prompting Chizuko to physically threaten him. After some intervention from Nagisa, Chizuko backs down and the stranger finally leaves. Chizuko expresses regret at her helplessness to help Manaka after the loss of her parents. After Nagisa changes the harasser's heart in Mementos, with some encouragement, the two return to the jazz bar and put on another performance. After the harasser returns, Chizuko is once again ready to defend her granddaughter, only to find to her surprise that he apologizes for his behavior. Afterwards, Chizuko speaks with Nagisa one-on-one and thanks him for his support, gifting him a saxophone reed for his efforts.

Later, during Manaka's Synergy, Chizuko suggests that Nagisa assist Manaka with her physical therapy by coming with her on their walks, which lifts both her and her granddaughter's spirits. After an incident where she nearly trips on Manaka's wheelchair due to her bad eye, Chizuko decides to return home at her granddaughter's suggestion, entrusting Nagisa with pushing Manaka's wheelchair.

Trivia

• The phrase "I can't find a good place to stop" in Vino's Finishing Touch may come from jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, who is said to have responded as such when questioned about the length of his solos.

Nomenclature

The surname means "long tail". The given name means "thousand-harbor child". The code name may refer to the Italian, Spanish, or Latin word for "wine". The Japanese translation substitutes the katakana チヅ chizu for the kanji 千津 chizu in her given name.
