Lufel is a character in Persona 5: The Phantom X. He goes by the code name Cattle.

Profile

Lufel is an owl-like creature that accompanies the protagonist. He has a wealth of knowledge on the Metaverse but he has amnesia on his own history. After the protagonist awakens his Persona, they form the Phantom Thieves with a goal to give people back their desire. His Persona is Robroy.

Unlike Morgana, who must be heard speaking in the Metaverse in order for someone to understand him in the real world as a change in their cognition, Lufel can already be heard in the real world by those with the "potential" (i.e., to awaken to a Persona).

Trivia

  • Lufel's use of the archaic personal pronoun washi (儂 / ワシ) doubles as a pun on the homophone 鷲 (washi), meaning "eagle". The use of this pronoun is also analogous to Morgana using another dated pronoun, wagahai (吾輩 / ワガハイ), to refer to himself (see Morgana#Trivia for details).

Nomenclature

Lufel's name in Chinese and Japanese may be derived from a clipping of Lucifer, as it is spelled identically but with one character removed.

Although his name had already been romanized as "Lufel" in Chinese and Japanese promotional material, Lufel's localized name was initially referred to as "Lefaye" in the preview App Store/Google Play Store description prior to the game's release. This would appear to be a reference, alongside Morgana's name, to Morgan le Fay (sometimes known as Morgana), a sorceress from the medieval Matter of Britain folklore. (Le Fay being derived from the French la Fée, it is spelled ル・フェイ (Ru Fei) in Japanese.) In the English version of the game, Lufel's name on his Synergy screen was changed to "Lefaye" in the 1.2 update, but this was reverted in the following update.

The codename Cattle is a reference to Rob Roy's occupation as a cattleman. Additionally, Lufel's Japanese codename (Japanese: キャトル"Cattle", romanized Kyatoru) and the latter half of the Japanese name of the Renault 4 (Japanese: ルノー・4transliteration of French "Renault Quatre", romanized Runō Kyatoru), on which the car Lufel transforms into in Mementos is based, are homophonous.
