Origin

Týr is a Norse god associated with battle. According to the Sigrdrífumál of the Poetic Edda and the Gylfaginning of the Prose Edda, Týr was invoked to increase chances of victory in battle; while these references to Týr's cult date to after Iceland was already Christianized, they probably have roots in older oral tradition.

In mythology, it is said that one of his hands was bitten off by the wolf Fenrir whilst the other gods were binding it. During Ragnarök, it is said Týr will be eaten by the wolf Garm.

Týr stems from a common Germanic tradition. Tacitus mentions the Germans as worshiping Mars, which has been speculated to refer to Týr, and the day of the week Tuesday (lit. "day of Týr") is a Germanic adaptation of the Latin dies Martis (day of Mars).

The rune ᛏ (equivalent to the Latin-alphabet t) is named for Týr in the Norwegian and Icelandic rune poems.

Nomenclature

The name Týr (*tīwaz in Proto-Germanic) was originally a common noun meaning "god" (from the Proto-Indo-European *deywós); Indo-European cognates include the Latin deus and the Sanskrit deva.^[1] The word týr (plural tívar) is still used as a generic word for "god" in Old Norse literature.
