After the waters of the Great Tokyo Flood receded in 203X, those who survived the destruction formed a free society where religious tolerance was practiced.[1] In 204X however, the Messian Church rose to power and converted the government into a theocracy where other faiths were forbidden.[2] Going into the 2050s, they ordered the construction of Tokyo Millennium, a city meant to further their goal of creating the Millennium Kingdom,[3] and was built atop the site of the Basilica.[4] The first district to be built was the Center, which is where the government came to operate from, and as Millennium expanded, additional districts were constructed around the center, which eventually covered what was left of the original Tokyo. They also created artificial demons known as Demonoids to serve as extra sources of labor and food.[5] By the 2060s, Millennium's construction was completed, so the Messians took the opportunity to banish anyone they did not see fit to live in their new city, including the Mutants, who had assisted in building the city,[6] and the Ring of Gaea, their long-time religious rivals who attempted many failed revolts.[7] It is also within this period that Tokyo Millennium's population grew exponentially as a result of large groups of people from throughout the world migrating to the city. As each area of Millennium is surrounded by a large dome providing oxygen and safety from the outside world, it was the only place left for humanity to go to, as the rest of the planet had become unlivable from a worsening global climate.[8]

In Tokyo Millennium's completed state, four other districts apart from the Center were created; Valhalla, the Factory, Holytown, and Arcadia. Valhalla ended up being the most populated district in Millennium due to the appeal of its blood sports and casinos.[9] Holytown was a smaller living area meant to draw people to the Grand Church located there.[10] The Factory functioned as an industrial area where food and materials were produced,[11] and Arcadia was an idyllic area meant to serve as a test for what the Millennium Kingdom could look like.[12] Eventually, Tokyo Millennium's inhabitants were split into four groups of class: The Elite, the First-Class Citizens, the Second-Class Citizens, and the General Citizens. The Elite were the Holy Knights, who had been promoted to being Millennium's official police force in 206X; Their promotion had the aftereffect of expanding the Center's level of control over the entirety of Tokyo Millennium.[13] The First-Class Citizens were permitted to live in the Center alongside the Holy Knights. Second-Class Citizens were merely those with the right to own COMPs, and the General Citizens were anyone else permitted to live in the city.[14] With Tokyo Millennium finally complete, all that was left for the people was to wait for the appearance of a Messiah to bring onto them the Millennium Kingdom.


Trivia

  • In the English-translated Tokyo Millennium Civilian passport by Aeon Genesis, there is a message from Gideon Zhi welcoming the reader to Tokyo Millennium. This is not part of the original passport, as it was added in by the lead translator for the Aeon Genesis team, Gideon Zhi.[15]
