| Reason: A lot of info present in the album's liner notes and this DengekiOnline interview |
The Shin Megami Tensei IV Original Soundtrack was primarily composed by Ryota Kozuka with some additional contributions from Kenichi Tsuchiya and Toshiki Konishi. Tsuchiya was the sound director for the project, where he focused on incorporating the essence and traditional feel of past Megami Tensei titles while showcasing the talents of the Sound Team’s "rising star" Ryota Kozuka.[1] Kozuka's approach to the soundtrack was similar to "assembling a doll from scraps," intentionally mixing in unconventional and non-musical sounds to build a slightly distorted atmosphere.[1]
Release
The album was released in Japan physically on four CDs and digitally on iTunes February 2014, published by Index Corporation and distributed by Mastard Records. Alongside the discs, the album came with a 22 page booklet featuring liner notes and track commentary from the three composers, and an "Illust Making" section showing Masayuki Doi's process for illustrating the box artwork for the game. Stickers of the cover design were included as a first print bonus.[2]
To commemorate the release, a limited-time costume exhibition was held at the HMV Lumine EST Shinjuku store from February 26 to March 11, 2014.[3][4] The exhibition displayed life-size costumes of two main characters, the protagonist and Isabeau, and the gauntlet used for the cover of the album was placed on the protagonist's left hand. Additionally, as a special bonus for visitors, original postcards were distributed for free on a first-come, first-served basis.
The album was included on the USB in the Shin Megami Tensei 30th Anniversary Special Sound Compilation, and received an English localization in August 2023 when it and the other Shin Megami Tensei series soundtracks featured on the 30th Anniversary album were released on digital streaming services worldwide, including Spotify and Apple Music.[5] A vinyl release by Fangamer, bundled with a pressing of the Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse Original Soundtrack, was originally planned for a 2024 release.
Reception
On the Oricon charts, the album peaked at number 64 and held a placement on the top 300 album list for 2 weeks.[6] Among critics of the game, the music was generally praised. Writing for Destructoid, Dale North said the game was "a treat for the ears," praising the dark and ambient themes while acknowledging that some battle themes and "middle ages-type tunes" were not to his taste.[7] Morgan Sleeper of Nintendo Life wrote that the soundtrack was a large reason why the atmosphere of the game excelled, and that the "music, sound effects, and ambient noises come together to craft a truly enthralling aural environment."[8]
"Battle -b2" was ranked 20th in a fan-voted poll held in 2017 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Shin Megami Tensei series. As a response to the ranking, which was the only song from the soundtrack within the top 20, Kozuka said that he "feel[s] a strong sense of regret" and joked that he would "get [his] revenge someday."[9] The song was also the only one from the soundtrack to be included on the Atlus 35th All-Time Best Soundtrack.
