Shin Megami Tensei II Sound Relation is the 2-disc soundtrack album for Shin Megami Tensei II on the Super Famicom.[1]

Disc 1 (Arrange Version) contains orchestral arrangements performed by City of London Sinfonia, while disc 2 (Original Version) contains the original in-game tracks composed by Tsukasa Masuko. Certain tracks on disc 2 different from their in-game versions, and in general the audio mixing is not quite the same as the in-game versions.

The album was remastered in 2017 as discs 3 and 4 of the Shin Megami Tensei Rare Soundtrack & Memorial Arrange Tracks album included in the "First Press Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Memorial Box" for the Japanese release of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. The soundtrack for the Super Famicom version of Shin Megami Tensei II was re-recorded from an actual console for the Shin Megami Tensei 30th Anniversary Special Sound Compilation album released in 2023, and those recordings were later released on streaming services as Shin Megami Tensei II Original Soundtrack (Super Famicom Version).

Booklet

Three booklets are included with the album, all with an embossed "真・女神転生II" on the front cover.

The first booklet is 23 pages long and documents the recording session for the Arrange Version tracks. Pages 2-11 include photos of the studio, the members of the London Sinfonia, and the recording staff. Pages 12-15 contain composer comments from Tsukasa Masuko on all ten of the Arrange Version tracks, and pages 16-19 contain a short excerpt from Masuko's personal diary about the trip to London. Pages 20-21 contain a "Recording Report" documenting the entire day of recording sessions written by Hidehito Aoki and Tsutomu Fujikawa, who had joined Masuko on the trip. The final page lists the staff members for the disc. This booklet has a white cover.

The second booklet is also 23 pages, and contains information for the Original Version tracks. Pages 2-7 contain composer comments from Tsukasa Masuko for all 28 tracks on the disc, and pages 8-13 have three days worth of Masuko's diary entries documenting the composition process for the game's music. Pages 14-17 give information about the Diamond Realm, including a map and screenshots of the area, and pages 18-21 have various other bits of gameplay and lore information. The last two pages contain a staff list and a track list. This booklet has a black cover.

The third booklet is a 15 page "Score Book" with sheet music for the Original Version's "Battle" theme, stylized as "<Battle> ~ Normal". The music has parts for a Guitar, Bass, Drums, a Hammond organ, and a Guitar Solo. The sheet music spans from pages 3-15. This booklet has a red cover.

Trivia

  • Track 7 of the Arrange Version disc, "Battle," was the first to be recorded and the last to be finalized.
  • On the day the three staff members were set to leave London, there was a terrorist attack at the airport in England they were planning to depart from.[2] Judging by the date of the recording session, it is likely this was the Heathrow mortar attack on March 13, 1994.
