Raidou Kuzunoha XIV is the title of a recurring character and the protagonist of the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha sub-series. He is an assistant detective at the Narumi Detective Agency and a Devil Summoner active during Japan's Taishō era.

Raidou Kuzunoha is not the protagonist's real name, but a title received from the Kuzunoha Clan.[3] His real name is not given and is left up to the player to name.

A precursor to Raidou's design is featured on an illustration by Kazuma Kaneko for Fujimi Fantasia Bunko.[4] This design was modeled after the character Cub from the anime Sally the Witch.[5]

To the public, he is merely a detective for the Narumi Detective Agency. To the underworld, he is Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV, a Devil Summoner who protects the capital under the Herald of Yatagarasu's orders. His partner is a black cat named Gouto.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army

On the surface, he's a student of Yumizuki High School working part-time at the Narumi Detective Agency. Don't let his looks fool you: he's really the latest Devil Summoner to bear the name "Raidou Kuzunoha." He slings a sword and packs a pistol to protect the Capital, but his real weapons are the demons tucked away in those tubes beneath his cape. His duties at the agency involve legwork around the Capital and doing the muscle work as a Devil Summoner. Raidou's thick as thieves with Gouto, a cat who offers equal parts advice and sarcasm. Gouto would never steer Raidou wrong, but the feline's past remains a mystery.

As far as the average stiff's concerned, he's a student at Yumizuki High School who works part-time at the Narumi Detective Agency. But to those in the know, he's the latest Devil Summoner to hold the name "Raidou Kuzunoha." He may carry a pistol and a sword to protect the Capital, but his real weapons are the demons he stores in those tubes underneath that cape of his. As a detective, he gathers information throughout the Capital, but when there's demon involvement, he's not afraid to call on his pals for some extra backup.

    • This lore was created on the fly during a fan event on release day of Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army.[6][7]
    • Daigaku imo appear in various media. In Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. Shibito Ekishi, he gives daigaku imo to an orphaned brother and sister.[8] In Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Lone Marebito Chapter 7, he eats toast topped with daigaku imo. In Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. Sekigankashin Part 1, Track 10, he gives daigaku imo to Kiyo Ichikawa.
  • Raidou is said to have a lovely singing voice.[9]
  • Raidou's tubes are engraved with numbers written in Ahiru script,[10] a writing system pseudo-historically linked to the Ahiru and Urabe clans of Tsushima.
  • Raidou's usage of a Colt "Lightning" revolver is a play on words with his name.[11] The kanji 雷 rai means lightning.
  • The school he attends is Yuzuki no Kimi Higher Normal School, which shares its name with Yuzuki no Kimi, the ancestor of the real-life Hata clan.[12] In the English version, his school is translated as Yumizuki High.[13]

Nomenclature

The clan name Kuzunoha means "arrowroot leaf", and comes from the mother of famous onmyōji Abe no Seimei.[22]
