Raguel is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Raguel[a] is an angel who appears in the Book of Enoch and Slavonic Enoch, two Jewish texts composed during the Second Temple period.

In Enoch 20:4, Raguel is listed among the seven holy angels of the powers; he is a holy angel who exacts vengeance upon the cosmos of the luminaries.[1] Raguel also appears in chapter 23, explaining to Enoch the fire he sees is the fire of the luminaries.[2] These passages mentioning Raguel are not preserved in the known Aramaic fragments.[3]

In Slavonic Enoch, Raguel is mentioned as one of two angels who carried Enoch to heaven.[4]

Raguel was apparently known in 8th century Francia, where he was mentioned in an oration by the heretic Aldebert. In response to this, a synod convened by Pope Zachary affirmed that the only named angels recognized by the Roman Church were Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and that any other angel names mentioned by Aldebert were really names of demons.[5]

Translation: Place of origin: Israel
An angel bearing the name "friend of God". Also called the "avenger of the world of light", he is believed to watch over the angels, denouncing those that commit sin. During a synod in the medieval Dark Ages, he was denounced by Pope Zachary for "having falsely walked the earth as a saint".

Nomenclature

Raguel is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew name רְעוּאֵל Rəʿûʾēl, meaning "friend of God/El".
