Queen Medb
Queen Medb, also known as Queen Mab, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
The demon Queen Medb is primarily based on Medb (anglicized as Maeve), a crafty warrior queen of Connacht in the Ulster Cycle of the Irish sagas.
The Megami Tensei franchise secondarily conflates Medb with a fairy named Mab, who was first mentioned in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as the midwife of the fairies.
Compendium entries' mention of giving mead mixed with her blood to her many consorts appears to derive from the entry for Queen Mab in Barbara Walker's The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets.[1] Walker cites a passage from the 1961 book Celtic Heritage on the sovereignty figure Medb Lethderg (not the same as Medb of Connacht), which, while it does mention myths of Medb Lethderg giving drinks to certain figures, there is no mention of blood.[2]
Design
The Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne design of Queen Medb is based on the Irish warrior queen Medb rather than the Shakespearean fairy Mab, hence she is human-sized and has a sword in a scabbard.[3] Kaneko found it difficult to come up with a design as the source figure is human. He made part of her clothing fur because he liked it, and he designed the upper armor to look like pearl scales.[4]
