This is an incomplete summary of Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2's plot. Be warned that spoilers are detailed below. As the game's main story is gradually added through periodic updates, the main story's plot is unfinished, and this page will be updated with subsequent development of the main story.

Main Story Season 1

Prologue and Chapter 1: Akihabara

The Prologue begins with the protagonist aimlessly wandering around Akihabara. Having little else to do, they decide to download the Dx2 app on their phone. Upon opening the app, they are immediately contacted by an older man who later introduces himself as Einherjar. He explains that the app allows people to summon Demons from their phone, making them Devil Downloaders or Dx2s for short. Einherjar further adds that a war is being waged between the Liberators and the Acolytes, the latter who follow an entity known as Vanitas. The protagonist is directed to the Liberators' secret hideout in Akihabara to meet with Taro Fuse, a popular 'Mega-Tube' video creator known by his alias Megakin and the leader of the Liberators' Tokyo Branch. There the protagonist also meets another Liberator, Rika Ryuzouji.

During Chapter 1, the protagonist returns to the Liberators' Hideout and catches a televised news program where the tabloid show host, Shimono, is vehemently criticizing Tokyo's youth in relation to a string of recent disappearances. Megakin is happy that the protagonist—whom he now nicknames 'Newbie'—has decided to join the Liberators. He assigns Newbie and Rika a case to solve together: young people all over Akihabara have been disappearing without a trace and the Acolytes are suspected to be responsible. Newbie and Rika begin their investigation outside and, over the course of their search, are repeatedly attacked by Acolyte assassins summoning Demons. As Rika teaches Newbie how to fight as a Dx2, she explains that the Dx2 app creates a barrier called a Decoherence Field that hides summoned Demons from normal people, allowing Dx2s to discreetly fight in public. She also explains that the Acolytes indiscriminately target people with high empathy quotients (EP), which block the spread of ill-will; however, she is unaware of the Acolytes' true motives or how their efforts would benefit Vanitas.

Newbie and Rika ask the locals for information, yet despite the high traces of Decoherence Fields, there are no eyewitnesses to the actual incidents. Megakin then calls the pair to pass a tip from a young girl in the area. They meet with the girl and learn that, after participating in a viral trend of dancing videos, she has been repeatedly attacked by an invisible entity. After defending her from another attack, Rika surmises that the viral videos are a clue to the disappearances. Megakin has Shiang Sun, another member of the Liberators, analyze the videos. Shiang Sun reports that a TV crew bus has been consistently appearing in the videos and suspects it is behind the kidnappings. Shortly after, Newbie and Rika are then attacked by Homunculi, faceless artificial humans created by the Acolytes as a source of easy manpower.

The group soon locate the bus and are immediately attacked by its crew. Rika calls for backup as she and Newbie fight off the Homunculi, however the girl they were protecting is then kidnapped by a Demon commanded by the culprit, the show host Shimono. Rika's backup, Ririn Ueda, arrives and secures the TV crew as Newbie and Rika leave to rescue the girl.

The pair confront Shimono at a warehouse, who admits he joined the Acolytes to boost his TV ratings by spreading malice. He swears that Vanitas will cause the collapse of the world with its algorithm. However, they defeat his Demons, and Rika refutes his claim as she declares the Liberators are the uncertainty that finds fault within Vanitas's algorithm.

Newbie and Rika return to the Liberators' Hideout and are congratulated by Megakin, commenting on the case's symbolism with how social media has been overtaking mass media. He formally welcomes Newbie to the Tokyo Liberators.

The chapter ends with two mysterious men, later revealed to be Jabo Kakuryu and Joshua Hawk, talking on a rooftop. Joshua affirms he needs to find a way to eliminate the Liberators.

Chapter 2: Shinjuku

Megakin begins filming a video warning that a new unknown drug has been circulating around Shinjuku and is causing the area to be on high alert. Newbie and Rika arrive shortly afterwards, having been called by Megakin earlier to investigate the Shinjuku drug. Megakin suspects the Acolytes have been spreading the drug to cause a rift with other criminal groups in the district. Shinjuku's rising criminal and suicide rates are also believed to be linked to the drug.

Before the group leaves to investigate, Megakin introduces Newbie to Seiran Saikawa, another member of the Liberators and a gatekeeper of the Aura Gate. Seiran explains that the Aura Gate is an alternate dimension also known as the Dragon Stream where the collective unconscious resides, as well as Demons. She challenges Newbie to a sparring match to test his abilities and, once satisfied, requests that Newbie accompany her sometime to investigate an abnormality with the Aura Gate.

Proceeding with their investigation, Newbie, Rika, and Megakin together visit one of the hospitalized drug victims. They are surprised to walk in on a suicide attempt, and quickly realize the victim has been possessed by a Demon. The attempt is stopped as they defeat the Demon and the victim is roused back to her senses. The group learn from her that the Shinjuku drug is taken digitally through a VR headset. After repelling a second attack by another possessed drug victim, believed to be sent by the Acolytes, the group then seek out Ririn and Shiang Sun for assistance with the case.

They visit Ririn at her workplace, a maid café, however she is too busy working to help them with their investigation. Shiang Sun begins investigating online on his laptop, which sets off a trap summoning a Demon to attack the party over the network. After the battle, Shiang Sun hacks the website the Demon came from and determines the drug dealers are connected to a painting store located in Shinjuku. The group proceed to investigate the store and realize it is actually a forgery ring peddling counterfeit paintings alongside the new drug. They are attacked by Demons during their investigation and are forced to escape; however, Shiang Sun had also managed to hack one of the store's PCs using an USB stick infected with malware. His efforts cause the PC to upload its data onto one of his servers, allowing the Liberators to discover the mastermind of the operation: Masahiro Sawada, a modern artist rumored to be involved with a plagiarism case five years ago.

Upon this discovery, the party go to confront Sawada at an art exhibit in Shinjuku about the drug distribution. Sawada denies their allegations and sends his underlings, the Acolytes and Homunculi, to attack while he escapes. The Liberators defeat them and chase after Sawada, cornering him. Sawada confesses that he had joined Acolytes after growing spiteful over the plagiarism accusations, and that he had created the Shinjuku drug to eliminate those with high EP. Additionally, he had tweaked the drug to create his own army of possessed minions to eliminate his accusers. A battle ensues and the Liberators defeat Sawada.

Sometime after, Megakin releases a new video detailing Sawada's shady dealings, which goes viral on the internet and results in politicians responding to the drug crisis as well as Sawada's plagiarized art being taken down. Ririn also rejoins the Liberators, after she was forced to defend the café from repeated attacks after the party had left.

Chapter 3: Kudanshita

Megakin asks the Liberators to investigate a series of murders that have occurred at a prestigious Tokyo high school, the Kudanshita Girls' Academy. Rika, a student at the school, is disturbed that all of the murder victims have been her fellow peers. Megakin notes that the serial killer always films and uploads the victims' final moments onto a public website. He suspects that the Acolytes are behind the murders and tasks the Liberators to find proof of their involvement.

Newbie, Rika, and Shiang Sun investigate a street between the academy and a park, where the last incident is believed to have taken place. As they discuss the killer's modus operandi, they realize they are being watched by a Demon and repel it. The attack leaves Rika certain that the Acolytes are somehow involved. Megakin then calls the group to report that he has analyzed the latest snuff video and concludes it has been professionally filmed and edited, indicating that the killer is likely involved with a studio. More Demons arrive to attack the Liberators, leading to suspicions that the Acolytes may be watching them from within the school and are panically reacting to their arrival.

Ririn accompanies Rika to investigate the academy while the others stay behind. Due to the murders, usage of the academy past school hours has been heavily restricted and students are now required to be escorted home by a teacher for their safety. Two students at the academy stand out to the pair: the student council secretary and an after-school club member. However, Rika and Ririn then find themselves surrounded by Demons and wonder if one of the students summoned them or is their next target. The pair return to Newbie and Shiang Sun to report the large number of Demons they have encountered at the school. A scream draws their attention back to the academy, but they are hindered by another Demon attack.

By the time they reach the academy, the party finds the latest victim, the student council secretary, being taken away in an ambulance. Ririn spots a student filming the ambulance and police cars. Suspicions fall upon the school's film club and the group decide to sneak inside, with the male Liberators posing as police officers. As they proceed, the ambushes turn more aggressive as Homunculi start targeting them. Shiang Sun presses one of the club members about their films, but is interrupted when the school's chairwoman enters and demands the Liberators leave. The club member follows the Liberators in secret and begs for their help, believing that she will be killed next. She confesses that the Acolytes have taken over the film club and have been forcing the students to participate in the murders and create snuff films. Learning that the films' raw footage is on the club's PCs, the Liberators hand this information over to the police. However, the police find no traces of this data and believe they were pranked.

The Liberators escort the film club member home and plan to sneak back into the school. As they leave the girl's house, Rika notes it is strange how they were repeatedly attacked at the school but not on the way back. Fearing for the girl's safety, the group hurries back to her house and saves her in time from a Homunculus. She is sent to the Liberators' hideout for protection. The party determines that the snuff videos are being created with the intent of recruiting depraved people into the Acolytes and that the chairwoman is the likely culprit. They confront her and she admits that she was the one who ordered the murders with the aim of recruiting new Acolytes. The Liberators defeat her Demons and her body abruptly dissipates. Shiang Sun surmises that the woman was already dead and that they were fighting a reanimated corpse; her sudden collapse was likely an attempt by the Acolytes to destroy evidence of their involvement.

With the murders stopped, the case is solved and life at the academy returns to normal. Rika however is saddened that they could not prevent the chairwoman's plans and fears they will one day face the Acolytes recruited by her scheme. The other Liberators reassure her that the remaining students are now safe thanks to their efforts.

Chapter 4: Shibuya

Megakin releases a new video covering an underground idol gig that was raided by police following a fight. He plays footage showing the events that transpired: The idol Shionyan thanks her fans for coming to see her show, including her biggest fan, Gokuto Inoue. However, as soon as her break starts, Shionyan drops her cute pretense and begins chastising her fans for not coming in larger numbers. Her criticisms cause her fans to angrily lose patience with her, resulting in a fight breaking out as Gokuto fights for her honor. Following the video, Megakin calls a meeting with the Liberators to discuss the Acolytes' expanding reach. Shiang Sun has narrowed down their activities to Shibuya, notable for being the center of operations of another organization called the Holy Land Union. Suspecting an alliance between the two, the Liberators head to Shibuya to investigate both groups.

Newbie, Rika, Ririn, Shiang Sun, and Megakin gather at a department store, believed to be the Holy Land Union's location. There they are abruptly approached by a pair of delinquents who attempt to attack and nab Newbie. Rika knocks down the men and Megakin interrogates them into admitting they were trying to kidnap Newbie for a bounty. The interrogation is interrupted when Acolyte assassins attempt to attack the Liberators with their Demons. Following the attack, the party decide to split up to gather clues while Newbie is made to hide. Their efforts determine that the boss of the Holy Land Union is a man named Hayate, a pro martial artist celebrity who is now on permanent suspension for his grossly violent conduct. Megakin suspects Hayate had placed the bounty on Newbie, but cannot determine a motive. They are once again attacked by more Acolytes and, after knocking them out, find ticket stubs on their persons to an underground fight club sponsored by the Holy Land Union.

Megakin formulates a plan to raid the fight club and calls in Jeng Yun Tsai, another Liberator and a skilled martial artist. Jeng Yun is able to escort the Liberators into the fight club for free by entering himself as a competitor, while Newbie is given a mask to protect their identity. The party arrive to find the fight club crowded and fights already underway. Ririn recklessly approaches a guard to ask for Hayate's whereabouts, and the Liberators are led to a passage where the guard reveals himself to be a Homunculus and attacks, but is defeated. Magakin finds the fight club's pamphlet in the Homunculus's suit and comes up with a new plan: because the establishment guarantees to always pay 10% of the wager no matter the winner, Megakin hopes to game the system by betting high on Jeng Yun until bets are called off. His gamble pays off as Jeng Yun wins four consecutive rounds, ensuring a meeting with Hayate.

Hayate meets with the Liberators and takes them to the arena's gambling den, where a number of rich and powerful figures are gathered. He explains to the group that the arena also hosts an auction for betting on people, specifically a contract that allows the winning bidder to do anything they want to the auctioned victim in the ring. Megakin tries to end the dark subject by demanding his winnings, however it turns out that Hayate does not have enough funds to pay Megakin's enormous bet, and instead has the Liberators surrounded by his Homunculi before leaving them. The group defeat the assailants and conclude that, although Hayate may not be an Acolyte himself, he is still benefiting from their manpower. As the Liberators chase after Hayate, the auction begins as the audience bid on a young girl. A man wins the auction and decides he will violently torture the girl. Disgusted, the Liberators resolve to destroy the fight club, yet they are obstructed as more Homunculi continue to attack.

Meanwhile, Einherjar and Jabo Kakuryu confront each other in the arena's staff room. Jabo comments to the other that Demons are thriving off of the depraved auctions, as the conflicting energies of misery and joy sow chaos. The Acolytes also seek more of this chaos and, to that end, Hayate has been indulging all involved parties. Einherjar however finds the whole display senseless, yet Jabo argues that all people have needs and that this chaos is necessary to prevent the extinction of mankind brought by Vanitas. Einherjar ignores him and turns his concern to the Liberators' activities, while Jabo confesses he had Hayate place a bounty on Newbie.

Rika and Ririn go after Hayate and are confronted by Acolytes. Hayate threatens to seriously injure several hostage civilians, forcing the pair to surrender as they are tied up. Elsewhere, Megakin and the others turn to rescue the girl in the ring. They manage to pull her out after pushing her assailant away, however Hayate forces them to also surrender with Rika and Ririn held hostage. The two girls are handed over to the winning bidder as compensation, while the rest of the Liberators are trapped in the ring by glass pane walls where they are forced to engage in a never-ending series of Demon battles. By the ninth round, an explosion abruptly blasts through the venue as a truck collides inside. The Liberators are freed in the ensuing chaos as the audience frantically leave before the press can arrive.

The truck driver is revealed to be Gokuto Inoue, a fellow Liberator with military experience. Gokuto leaves to rescue Rika and Ririn while the rest take on Hayate's Demons. Hayate is defeated, but evades capture by disappearing into the enveloping smoke as fire spreads through the venue. Gokuto returns with Rika and Ririn, both unharmed as the Demon fights had distracted the man. As the party make to leave the venue, they are suddenly approached by a man unknown to them, Jabo, who formally introduces himself. He immediately challenges the Liberators to his Demons and manages to overpower them one by one. Megakin tells the others to escape while he holds off Jabo; however, Jabo advises that they all exit the blazing building and concedes defeat for their sake. The gesture offends Megakin as he swears he will defeat the Acolytes and Vanitas at all costs, to which Jabo skeptically questions his resolve and claims that Vanitas must never be destroyed whether for good or bad. He then recounts to the Liberators how the first flu pandemic had came into being and spread with the development of travel and technology, concluding that great advancement inevitably leads to disaster. Pointing to the quick advancement of the internet, he then questions if this advancement will lead to humanity's downfall and determines that Vanitas will ultimately decide their fate. Jabo once again urges the Liberators to leave the building before disappearing into the smoke. Megakin is dejected over the party's first major loss.

Several days following the incident, the Holy Land Union has dissolved after their fraudulent activities were exposed and Hayate gone missing. With no one left to pay the bounty, Newbie is deemed safe from any would-be hunters. Megakin is back to his optimistic self and has resolved to find a way to defeat Jabo. Jeng Yun also dedicates himself fully to the Liberators' cause.

Chapter 5: Ikebukuro

At the hideout, the Liberators watch a newscast covering eight serial bombings that have occurred throughout Japan, resulting in thousands of casualties. Megakin is disturbed by the newscaster's nonchalant attitude toward the many lives lost, while the other Liberators take notice of his changed attitude. Rika informs that the police have approached them to unofficially ask for their help in investigating the string of bombings. Because of the sophisticated nature of the incidents, Megakin recruits Gokuto Inoue for his expertise as an ex-mercenary.

The party head to a shopping district where the first bomb had gone off. While the other Liberators are skeptic about finding any missing leads, Megakin introduces them to their second helper: Shiori Koden, a Liberator also known as the underground idol Shionyan and for her high intelligence. During their investigation, in which Acolyte and Homunculus assassins repeatedly try to intercept the Liberators, Shiori recommends they scan the bombing site for traces of Decoherence Fields. However, she struggles to find any traces and believes the fields have been tampered with using the Dragon Stream, concluding that the culprit behind this is likely a feng shui master. Megakin calls their own Dragon Stream gatekeeper, Seiran Saikawa, for help.

Seiran tracks the tampering to a street in Ikebukuro. There the group determine that the Acolytes have been planting the bombs by turning their Homunculi into mobile explosives. The Liberators are shortly confronted by feng shui mercenaries hired by the Acolytes, and realize they were behind the Dragon Stream's tampering in order to mask traces of the Homunculus bombs. After knocking them out, Gokuto interrogates the mercenaries and learns that the plot's mastermind is located in Ikebukuro Eclipse Tower.

As the Liberators approach the site, they are suddenly ambushed by Acolytes as Joshua Hawk appears and kidnaps Shiori. The Liberators give chase as they storm the tower and are met by more enemies along the way.

In one of the tower's offices, Shiori confronts Joshua, recognizing him as an eco-terrorist from an extremist nature conservation group. Joshua tries to persuade Shiori into joining his cause, and confesses that he has been planting bombs in order to pollute the Dragon Stream as part of his ultimate goal to reset society. The other Liberators break through the Acolytes and barge into the office. Surrounded, Joshua takes the opportunity to explain what Vanitas is: Vanitas is an entity born from the collective unconsciousness and communications between humanity, comparing it to a device that was 'installed' on Earth by a higher entity to test mankind. Vanitas can be used by anyone, and depending on how it is used, it can bring the world bliss or devastation. For this reason, Joshua believes that Vanitas is the will of the Earth and that its existence validates his belief in the Gaia theory. The Liberators rebuke him as crazy and Joshua summons his Demons in retaliation, but is defeated and makes his escape. The Liberators lose him in the process, however they report the tower as the bombs' facility to the police.

Back at the hideout, although disappointed in losing Joshua, the Liberators are nonetheless confident that they are cornering the Acolytes thanks to their teamwork. Shiori reluctantly thanks the party for saving her. Elsewhere, Jabo and Joshua once again meet on a building's rooftop. Jabo asks Joshua if the Liberators were tough, but Joshua is not discouraged and resolves to send out the Acolytes' best Demons next time. He recognizes that their interference with the Dragon Stream is nonetheless going to plan and reaffirms that he will destroy the human race to save the Earth.

Chapter 6: Akihabara Hideout

A newscast shares a follow-up on the serial bombings, reporting that the incidents have brought the economy to a standstill while police continue to be inundated with complaints from civilians. The news leaves the Liberators discouraged as they comment on the rising tensions along with the rise of mysterious incidents occurring globally, suspected to be the work of Demons. Although they had solved the bombing case and shut down the facility creating the bombs, they are unable to go public with their findings and recognize that Joshua is still at large. Seiran Saikawa then joins the group, having finished her research into the Dragon Stream's anomaly and Vanitas's involvement. She clarifies that the Dragon Stream is the flow of the Earth's energy and that the layout of settlements are designed to complement its flow. However, the recent bombings have targeted several important spots of spiritual power and polluted the Dragon Stream, consequently leading to a sharp rise in crime and natural disasters around the world. While changing the Dragon Stream's flow would ordinarily take years of calculated planning, Seiran suspects that the Acolytes' goal is to use Vanitas to instantly simulate the stream's flow and target key areas of interest. She fears that if the damage were to continue at this rate, it will lead to the entire destruction of Japan. The Liberators thus leave to stop the Acolytes' plan, while Seiran heads to Akihabara to mitigate as much of the Dragon Stream's damage as she can.

Outside, the Liberators are ambushed by a large group of Acolytes, yet manage to fend them off. Jeng Yun interrogates one of the Acolytes, learning that the group had captured and tortured a Liberator ally into revealing their hideout's location. Mere moments after this revelation, the party realize their hideout's building is being raided by the Acolytes. At the same time, Seiran is also being targeted and she phones the Liberators for backup. The party split up as Newbie and Megakin leave to help Seiran while the others return to the hideout. Seiran is able to fend off her attackers with the pair's aid, before urging them to hurry back to the hideout.

At the hideout, the rest of the party rush to the aid of several Liberators stationed in the building. Rika aids Vagit Chukhov in the Church of the False Gods; Ririn and Shiori rescue Himika Hyuga at Pandemonium on the hideout's rooftop; Shiang Sun protects the butler Kazufumi Fukumoto and his Dx2 store; and Jeng Yun guards Arisa at the hideout's Summoning Portal. They clear out several Homunculi invading the building.

Newbie and Megakin rejoin the others and help them clear out the remaining Acolytes as Himika erects a protective barrier around the hideout. The Acolytes' attack is momentarily repelled, yet Gokuto arrives to warn the group that the mastermind behind the attack is now en route with reinforcements. The party take to the streets to meet their assailants head-on as night falls over Tokyo. There they reunite with Hayate leading an army of Acolytes, and a skirmish between the two factions breaks out. In the midst of the fighting, a blinding light descends between the groups and reveals to be Einherjar in the flesh. He expresses his disappointment in the Liberators for allowing the Acolytes to gain the upperhand. While stunned, the appearance does not deter Hayate as he continues his assault. Einherjar advises the Liberators to focus on Hayate while he takes on the remaining Acolytes himself. Hayate is defeated and collapses to the ground in exhaustion along with the defeated Acolytes.

The Liberators demand Einherjar for an explanation. Einherjar reveals that he is actually a vessel for both God and the Devil to communicate with humanity, and is also known as Mephistopheles. God and the Devil had made a binding pact to never interfere with humanity's world—the Demon World. For that reason, they appear as the vessel Einherjar in order to equally influence humanity and to use the Liberators to fight the Acolytes. However, Einherjar denies any involvement with the Acolytes, who act independently.

Their conversation is interrupted as Jabo Kakuryu arrives and asks the Liberators to listen to his side. He confirms that he and the Acolytes are working together to pollute the Dragon Stream. Einherjar accosts Jabo for interfering and breaking the pact, but Jabo ignores him and reveals to the party that he is Astaroth in disguise. As Astaroth, he can see both the past and future, and warns the Liberators that on their current trajectory, their actions will inevitably lead to humanity's downfall. Jabo has deliberately chosen to break the pact to save humanity and asks the Liberators to ally with him. Einherjar attempts to reason with the Liberators to not be deceived and claims that Jabo only intends to enslave humanity under the guise of salvation. Their argument prompts Newbie to choose between siding with Einherjar or Jabo. This choice will later determine the chapter's epilogue outcome.

Regardless of Newbie's choice, Einherjar and Jabo decide to fight each other to decide humanity's fate, and they order the Liberators to step outside of the Decoherence Field. Their demand infuriates Megakin, refusing to allow humanity be dictated by either entity and argues that Jabo's predictions cannot be certain. The Liberators then realize that because Jabo intervened, the future's trajectory had in fact changed and that its outcome is not guaranteed. Jabo is left at a loss for words as he can no longer perceive what the future now holds. Realizing that the Liberators will not join him, Jabo sics his Demons on them while he and Einherjar commence their fight. Their battle comes to a truce when the entities' immense power threatens to burst the Decoherence Field in what would be a devastating blast. However, they also agree to settle their conflict with a wager on the Liberators and Homunculi. If the Liberators win against the wave of Homunculi, then Jabo must reveal the location of Joshua Hawk and both entities must leave humanity to their own devices. If the Liberators lose, then humanity cannot decide their own fate.

As the Liberators fight off the Homunculi, an injured Hayate crawls toward the group and swears he will not die in defeat. Jabo suggests that Hayate could use the Homunculi to aid him, but warns that it will cost him his life. Hayate beckons the wave of Homunculi toward him and they fuse with his body, transforming him into a monstrous albeit unstable superhuman. Hayate swears in desperation to win at all costs as his body quickly begins disintegrating. The Liberators agree to fight him a final time, recognizing the little time his life has left, and defeat the Demons that spring from his body. Defeated, Hayate laments over his failures before his body completely disintegrates into dust. Jabo promises to take him to a world without winners or losers.

If Newbie had sided with Einherjar earlier, the Liberators are declared the winners in the wager. Jabo confides that Joshua Hawk and the base of the Acolytes are located in Odaiba. Both Jabo and Einherjar keep their promise to leave humanity to their own fate and watch from afar. The Liberators will continue to receive mission rewards from Einherjar's look-alike A.I. assistant. Einherjar bids the Liberators good luck and disappears along with Jabo in a flash of light. Following this, the story proceeds to the main Chapter 7.

If Newbie had sided with Jabo earlier, they are secretly approached by Jabo in an isolated dreamscape following the battle. Jabo asserts that due to his intervention, he can no longer see the future but warns that humanity's safety is still not guaranteed. However, he adds that Newbie still has the opportunity to choose their own path and that they and Joshua will ultimately determine the future of mankind. Jabo thus proposes that Newbie try to reason and cooperate with Joshua. If Newbie declines, Jabo advises they search for another way to save humanity before bidding farewell. If they choose to listen, Jabo warns that the key to saving humanity would involve betraying their teammates. Newbie is once again given another choice to agree or disagree with this pact. If they agree, they are given a purple gemstone brooch as proof of their pact with Jabo. This outcome leads to Chapter 7: Odaiba Alternate.

Chapter 7: Odaiba

The Liberators arrive at Odaiba to confront Joshua Hawke, finding that his base is actually a cruise ship docked at the harbor. Reminiscing of their time together and what is most important to each of them, the party strengthen their resolve to win the final battle as they board the ship and fight off ambushes of waiting Acolytes.

The Liberators eventually locate an ominous chamber housing a device resembling the Antikythera mechanism inside, an ancient Greek analogue computer. Joshua then addresses the party through the ship's intercom, explaining that the computer they found is a transmitter to communicate with and direct Vanitas, all the while more Acolytes attempt to intercept the Liberators. He explains that Vanitas feeds off of the ill-will of humanity, giving it strength; soon, the world's malice will inevitably grow so strong that Vanitas will unleash an apocalypse and destroy modern civilization. Megakin, however, is not deterred by Joshua's threats, arguing that humanity's interconnections—thanks in part to the internet fostering cultural exchange and global bonds—amount to more than the world's malice. Joshua attempts to deflect by countering that the advent of technology had also brought countless tragedies throughout history, and reaffirms his goal of saving the world by resetting civilization to a primitive state with Vanitas's power.

Braving through more of Joshua's henchmen, the Liberators eventually make their way to the ship deck where they finally confront Joshua directly. Joshua is driven to a corner and weakened as they defeat his summoned Demons. However, he reveals his final trump card: the Acolytes have provoked just enough malice to manifest a part of Vanitas. A black vortex then opens, summoning an amorphous creature as the embodiment of the world's malice. Megakin devises a plan to have Newbie take on the Malice Monster while the rest of the Liberators hold off the Demons it summons. Unexpectedly however, the Malice Monster grabs hold of Joshua and absorbs him into its body. Joshua's resolve to protect the planet fuses with the creature and manifests as his voice. The Liberators break through the summoned Demons and deliver the final strike, destroying the Malice Monster as it disintegrates. The ship begins to sink from the sustained damages and the Liberators evacuate.

Although the party are relieved to have defeated the Acolytes, Shiori admits that Joshua had been right about the existence and power of Vanitas. Megakin, however, chooses to remain hopeful, noting that if they can continue to dispel malice and sustain good-will, it will stave off Vanitas's coming. Seiran Saikawa then contacts the party to report they have successfully stopped the Dragon Stream's pollution and that for now it has stabilized. As the other Liberators leave to celebrate their victory, Megakin thanks Newbie for all of their help thus far. Realizing that Newbie is no longer a 'newbie' at that point, Megakin contemplates giving them a new nickname, but settles on making Newbie their official codename.

A few days later, Jabo Kakuryu and Einherjar meet each other on a rooftop. Einherjar asks Jabo if he can perceive the Liberators' 'other future', referring to the alternate events of Odaiba. However, he otherwise has no interest in hearing of what could have been, and dismisses the different outcomes as a minor trifle; especially when considering the upcoming 'Extinction event' now in humanity's future. Ultimately the two entities conclude that there is nothing either of them can do about that now, having agreed to leave humanity to their own fate. Einherjar asks Jabo why he is still here then, to which Jabo responds that powerful Demons have begun amassing in large numbers. He suggests they watch Mega-Tube videos instead, where a 'virtual princess' has now appeared.

Following this, the story proceeds to the Intermission season.

Chapter 7: Odaiba Alternate

Newbie awakes to the worried faces of the Liberators, having blacked out when Jabo contacted them through the dreamscape. The group reconvene at the Hideout to recuperate before the final battle with Joshua. There, Newbie confides with their friends the dream they had and what Jabo had told them. The others, however, are doubtful of Jabo's claims and Megakin refuses to side with Joshua. Ririn suggests that, as they are headed for Odaiba either way, they could decide after scouting the situation there. Megakin is still suspicious, but reluctantly agrees with this course of action.

Arriving at Odaiba, Shiori shares her thoughts with the group that if humanity is unquestionably doomed, it may be worthwhile allying with Joshua. Yet the other Liberators remain conflicted. While fending off Acolyte ambushes, the Liberators are surprised to find Einherjar there. Although he had agreed to leave humanity to their own fate, Einherjar is suspicious of the Liberators' motives and the effect it will have on the future. As the Liberators and Acolytes are sworn enemies, Einherjar cannot allow them to join forces. He, however, cautiously relents after Megakin explains they have not made a decision yet, but gravely warns the Liberators to choose wisely before letting them continue their search for Joshua.

Making their way onto the cruise ship's deck, the Liberators find Joshua waiting for them there. Shiori attempts to talk with him, but Joshua distrustfully laughs off the offer and engages the group in battle. They defeat his summoned Demons, forcing Joshua into negotiations. Joshua admits that Jabo had told him earlier that a group would come seeking to talk and join sides, but remains deeply skeptical of the Liberators' motives. He nonetheless agrees to listen to their side as they explain Newbie's meeting with Jabo. Joshua reiterates what he had told Shiori at Ikebukuro: the only way to save the world is to reset civilization to a primitive state and restore the world's balance using Vanitas's power; he surmises that this must be why Jabo had urged them to join forces. Megakin, however, vehemently denies this plan and summons his Demons to attack Joshua. Suddenly, Newbie hears Jabo's voice from the purple brooch given to them, urging them to protect Joshua. Betrayed, Megakin turns his Demons onto Newbie, but is defeated.

Jabo then addresses the whole group through the brooch; since he had made the deal with Einherjar, he cannot contact the group directly. To help them reach a decision, Jabo intends to shed more insight by showing a vision of the future ahead. The group awaken to a vision of an annihilated cityscape devoid of life save for roaming Demons. Jabo warns that if they do not join forces, this is the future that will befall humanity. Joshua realizes that his plan to use Vanitas would fail and cause the total eradication of humanity. Jabo further adds that connectivity via the internet has allowed malice to grow to levels unheard of in human history, assuring that Vanitas would wipe out all of humanity if allowed to. Shiori concludes that this is the reason why Jabo suggested they join forces, as globalization has allowed malice to run rampant. Megakin, however, still angrily refuses to ally with Joshua.

If Newbie chooses to side with the Acolytes, a rift is formed between the Liberators as Megakin, Jeng Yun, and Rika attempt to stop the others. In the midst of the infighting, Einherjar once again appears before the group and chastises them for their hasty actions. Enraged by Newbie's betrayal, Einherjar strips them of their Liberator status and summons Demons to destroy them. Joshua lends Newbie his strength as he faces Einherjar himself. Einherjar stabs Joshua with his open hand, yet despite the mortal wound, Joshua manages to hold down Einherjar long enough for Newbie to close the distance and land a final blow. Both Joshua and Einherjar collapse to the ground, but the downed Einherjar is revealed to only be his avatar.

Einherjar concedes defeat and leaves Newbie to follow the path they have chosen, but warns it will lead to great disaster. Joshua, in his dying breath, leaves all of his ideals and authority over the Acolytes to Newbie before passing away. Having made their decision, Newbie wordlessly walks away into the distance, leaving the Liberators behind as they call after them.

Newbie wanders through the streets of Tokyo has they had once done before: alone and aimlessly toward an uncertain future. Jabo approaches Newbie and commends them for the path they have chosen, acknowledging how lonesome and difficult it is. Before leaving, Jabo assures that neither he nor any Demon wish for humanity's extinction, as both humanity and demonkind are inextricably tied to one another.

A number of years later, Newbie walks through the destroyed remains of Tokyo in the aftermath of a rain of ICBMs. In the end, humanity was unable to avoid total destruction after all. This ending opens up to the Alter-World story.

If Newbie refuses to join the Acolytes, the Liberators also together refuse. Disappointed in Newbie's decision, Jabo bids a final farewell as the purple brooch crumbles to dust. Newbie is returned to their world, but the future proceeds to an inescapable fate.

Intermission 1

Prologue

The Alternate Hero, the protagonist who chose to betray the Liberators in the events of Chapter 7: Odaiba Alternate, contemplates the destroyed remains of Tokyo. Jabo Kakuryu approaches and asks them what it was like to witness the world's end. The Alternate Hero admits they felt awful knowing their choice could not prevent Vanitas's destruction, however, the outcome had also helped them to realize the true nature of Vanitas and the meaning of their actions, leaving them with no regrets. They then ask Jabo to tell them what had happened in the alternate future they did not choose. Jabo obliges the request and begins to recount the events that followed after Joshua's defeat, hinting that it is only the intermission to a much larger story.

Episode 1

Following the final battle at Odaiba, the Liberators leave for a victory vacation at the oceanside beach. Shiang Sun is concerned what will happen to the Liberators' organization with Einherjar's departure. Nonetheless, operations have been proceeding steadily and Megakin points out that Joshua's defeat does not mean the end of the Acolytes either.

The beach party is interrupted when a man frantically comes asking for help, whose friend is drowning after being grabbed by a monster. The Liberators find the Demon responsible and dispatch it, saving the friend's life, but are confused as to the Demon's origin. Shiang Sun notes the lack of a Decoherance Field, suggesting it had acted alone. The Liberators resume their partying and are interrupted by more Demon attacks over the day's course.

The following day, Shiori and Gokuto join the others at the beach. Once again, more Demons attempt to pursue the Liberators. Shiang Sun determines they are being targeted. Undeterred, the Liberators nonetheless continue to enjoy their vacation in spite of the periodic attacks. They decide to go fishing next and shortly catch a Peallaidh, who vehemently threatens that every Demon in the vicinity are now indiscriminately attacking Dx2s in retribution for the Acolytes' forced abductions. Gokuto speculates the Acolytes may be replenishing their lost ranks by force. Attempts to pacify the Peallaidh fails as the Liberators then find themselves surrounded by more Demons, forcing them to retreat to Megakin's seaside mansion as the Demons pursue them and break inside.

Gokuto formulates a plan to dispatch the Demons by blowing up the mansion with explosives while the party takes cover in the basement, to Megakin's disappointment. The plan succeeds as all the Demons are wiped out in the blast. Although now without a mansion and most of their travel belongings, the Liberators optimistically resume the remainder of their vacation.

Alter-World

Alter-World takes place several years after the events of Chapter 7: Odaiba Alternate.

The protagonist recalls how they met their new companion: an unique Pixie, who uses the design introduced in the Devil Summoner series. She calls for them, pointing out how the sky in the distance is dark, and thinks that it might rain. The protagonist's look prompts her to ask if they're too good to be troubled by the weather, and she circles the air in frustration. They then hear the footsteps of Jabo Kakuryu, who had been searching for the protagonist. Jabo greets Pixie, but she hides herself behind the protagonist, feeling "strange vibes" from him. Jabo then greets the protagonist, who is also upset at him. Despite this, he says that he has something to tell them. Jabo asks the protagonist how Vanitas was activated, causing the destruction of the world, and they answer that it was because they couldn't supress malice. Jabo says that, because they underestimated Vanitas and let it awaken faster than they expected, they should take responsibility for failing to save the world. He then proposes that Vanitas's awakening was staged by someone who tricked even himself and brought the destruction of the world on purpose. When he realized that, he thought that the survivors might still be able to be saved. He then asks the protagonist how the world was destroyed, which they cannot answer. Jabo tells them to travel the world if they want to find the truth, but cautions them that the world has become hostile to humans. He says that he still wants to save the surviving humans, and hopes to work with the protagonist again, then leaves. The protagonist then checks their supplies, noticing that they are slightly short, so they decide to leave immediately, surprising Pixie, who was going to propose to leave the next day.

Blasted Ueno

The protagonist is running through the wasteland, holding a barely-conscious Pixie. They find a town, which they believe might have supplies, and run to it. They are greeted by a man, who recognizes them as a stranger to their town, then identifies them as a lone Dx2 due to their Pixie; he notes that he had never met a Dx2 in person, but still knew of them. He then notices that Pixie has a high fever due to poisoning, and that they need to act on it, but they have no medical supplies for demons. The protagonist asks for anything that might help, so he tells them about a rumored Unicorn around the ruins of Ueno Park, whose horn can cure poison, though they viciously attack anyone who enters the area, and nobody has survived the encounter.

The protagonist settles in Ueno Park with a campfire, waiting for the Unicorn to appear. The flames remind them of a moment years in the past, not long after the world was destroyed. The protagonist was wandering through a mountain path, when they were suddenly confronted by an Orthrus, who they fought off by cutting its leg, then continued climbing. They eventually reached the end of the path, meeting with a tall cliff and thinking of jumping off to their death, though they were interrupted by the faint groan of a Pixie.

Their recollection is interrupted by the sound of the rumored Unicorn, who is especially large. They fight, with the protagonist landing a blow with their sword, though the Unicorn is undeterred, and they lock their sword with its horn. The Unicorn deflects their sword, then charges at the protagonist, who puts up their shield at the last moment.

Pixie, still suffering from her poisoning, recalls a memory of her own, shortly before the destruction of the world. A group of Pixies who look like her were patrolling the Faerie Forest under King Oberon's orders, when they suddenly heard the sound of something moving through it. The ground shook and cracked open, causing several trees to fall. The Pixies left to warn Oberon, though one was pulled into the ground, with her screams going unheard. She later woke up in a forest that felt different than usual, then was met by a group of Pixies who couldn't identify her as one due to her different appearance. The Pixies take her to King Oberon, who the other Pixie didn't identify as the Oberon she knew. Oberon took an interest in her and asked for the full story. He guesses that she is a demon from another world who found herself in theirs due to the drastic changes in the world allowing things that shouldn't normally be possible, and that finding her way back wouldn't be easy. Oberon suggested that she should stay in the forest with them, which she accepts. The next day, she lonelily watched the other Pixies playing, missing the friends she had in her world. She decided to leave the forest in search of a way back, flying herself to exhaustion and falling unconscious on the mountain path the protagonist found her in.

The protagonist feels pain and blood from their abdomen, as they could not stop the Unicorn's charge entirely, and it continues its agressive attack. The protagonist lands another blow, which they believed would be fatal, though they are caught off-guard by it, who still managed to attack them and send them flying. Another memory is shown, after the protagonist took care of the Pixie. They camped beside the cliff, waiting for her to recover, even though she was still in bad shape. The Pixie woke up, and thanked them for their aid. She told them her story and how much she misses her home, and started crying. Some time later, she recovered her stamina and flew away, still hoping to find a way home.

The protagonist wakes up from unconsciousness due to pain, coughing blood on the pavement. They lift themselves up, then begin fighting the Unicorn again. They wonder how the Unicorn is so powerful and frenzied, dodging its attack and landing another of their own. Another memory is shown of the Pixie flying through the mountain path. She wondered about the protagonist, who looked like they were about to die, though she was by herself again. She is met by the same Orthrus that the protagonist met and is attacked by it. Her attempt to escape was unsuccessful, and she fell again before the Orthrus. The protagonist found her and chased off the Orthrus, then she fell unconscious. She woke up next to the protagonist again, and asked why they saved her again, but they couldn't answer. She asked why they are alone in the mountain path, wondering about their friends and family, to which they answered that they have nothing left. Pixie offered to stay with them, which made them start crying. The protagonist looked at them and had a realization that the world is made out of everything that lives in it, then accepted their offer, deciding to not commit suicide to at least see her story through.

The protagonist deals another blow to the Unicorn with waning strength. The Unicorn unsteadily retreats, though the protagonist gives chase. They have a standoff and begin the end of their conflict. The protagonist manages to land a killing blow, and the Unicorn finally collapses. The protagonist finds a skeletal corpse beneath the Unicorn, wearing tattered clothes and holding a broken smartphone. They deduce that the Unicorn was faithfully protecting its master, even though they were already dead.

The protagonist and Pixie are aimlessly wandering through the wasteland again. Pixie is healed from her poison, though the protagonist is still recovering from their fight with Unicorn. Pixie decides that they should stop to eat, and tries to thank the protagonist for their help, but the protagonist thanks her for saving them first. Pixie thinks that something is to blame for them acting out of character, but they flick a finger on her forehead, upsetting her. She flies away pouting, and the protagonist follows her after contemplating their existence.
