This is an incomplete summary of the plot of Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2. Be aware of spoilers ahead. Due to the nature of the game, the main story's plot is unfinished, and this page will be updated with subsequent development of the main story.

Season 1

Chapter 1

The protagonist is walking around Akihabara, and decides to download the Dx2 app. After a short introduction, in which they are trained to become a Devil Downloader (Dx2) by Einherjar, they are then directed to a building in Akihabara, the Liberators's hideout. They are greeted by Taro Fuse, the popular 'Mega-Tuber' Megakin, who introduces the Liberators and the Acolytes, the two main factions of Dx2 users. They are instructed to investigate a series of disappearances with another Liberator known as Templar Dragon, Rika Ryuzouji.

The protagonist, given the codename Newbie, and Rika walk around Akihabara, being attacked by Acolyte Assassins who summon demons to try and kill the group. Rika tells Newbie that the Acolytes target people with high empathy quotients (EP), and that the Acolytes worship something called Vanitas. Rika also introduces Homunculi, which are faceless humans created by the Acolytes as a source of easy manpower. After some time investigating and fighting off demons, Megakin calls the two to let them know that one of his followers has information on the disappearances. They meet the follower, a girl who is being targeted by assassins after creating a video and posting it online.

Megakin calls another Liberator, Shiang Sun, to analyze the video, and the group discovers that the girl had filmed a moment of kidnapping by a TV crew in the background. The TV crew appears, and attack the group. Rika calls for backup as her and the Newbie fight off the Homunculi, however the girl is kidnapped by the culprit, TV host Shimono. Rinin Ueda, another Liberator, arrives as Rika's backup, and secures the TV crew as Newbie and Rika go to rescue the girl.

They confront Shimono, who explains that human malice gains TV ratings, and that with the Acolytes he has the power to stay ahead of the competition. He also mentions that Vanitas will change everything, and that its algorithm will cause the collapse of the world. Newbie and Rika then fight Shimono's demons and win. Defeated, Shimono declares that the algorithm is perfect, but Rika responds that the Liberators are the uncertainty that finds fault within the algorithm.

Newbie and Rika return to the Akihabara hideout, and Megakin congratulates the both of them, commenting on how symbolic the case is in regard to how social media is overtaking mass media. He then welcomes Newbie to the Tokyo Liberators.

The chapter ends with Jabo Kakuryu and Joshua Hawk talking upon a rooftop, and Joshua noting that he needs to find a way to deal with the Liberators.

Chapter 2

The chapter starts with Megakin filming a video, which mentions a new drug that has appeared around Shinjuku that is causing the area to be on high alert. Rika and the Newbie arrive, and are told that Acolytes are the one spreading the new drug around, causing gang wars in the area as other criminal syndicates cannot match the power of demons. Alongside the rising suicide rates, Rika, Newbie and Megakin are assigned to investigate the incident.

The group go visit one of the drug users, who is currently hospitalized. However, they walk in on a suicide attempt by the victim, and quickly realize that she has been possessed by a demon. After defeating the demon, the attempt is stopped, and they learn that the drug is a digital drug that users take with VR headsets. After getting attacked by another possessed drug victim, the group seeks out Rinin and Shiang for assistance in the case.

Ririn is unable to join the group in investigating, so Shiang joins and begins to investigate the digital network the drug is spreading through, setting off a trap which summons a demon that attacks the party. Afterwards, Shiang determines that the drug dealers are connected to a forgery ring which located in Shinjuku. The group finds the building that the forgery ring is operating out of, and go to investigate the building. They are attacked by demons after investigating, and escape, but Shiang infects a PC within the building with malware, and discovers the mastermind of the operation: Masahiro Sawada, a modern artist who is selling forgeries of his own work. Shiang mentions that Sawada is surrounded by rumors of plagiarism and was involved with a similar case 5 years ago.

Upon this discovery, the party goes to confront Sawada about the drug distribution. They travel to his art gallery and learn that Sawada is a member of the Acolytes, and that the drug was designed to find people with high EP to kill. Sawada sends Acolyte Dx2s and Homunculi after the party, but the party is able to defeat all enemies and Sawada after cornering him.

Sawada is arrested, and the drug ring is shut down. Megakin congratulates the group on a successful mission.
