コキトエルコス

Cogitoergos is a skill in the Game Gear remaster of Last Bible.

Profile

Cogitoergos can only be used in the game's final battle against the Universal Consciousness, and will have no effect if used in any other battle. When used, El will collapse in battle and the Universal Consciousness will be made vulnerable to the party's attacks. As revival methods cannot be used in-battle, El will no longer be able to participate in the battle after using the skill.

Last Bible

After Lucifer is defeated and the Fifth Planet consequently destroyed by the Orichalcum, the Goddess of Force tasks the party with building a new civilization on Terra and teaches El the Cogitoergos skill, instructing him to cast it "at the end of the world."

When the party later fight the Universal Consciousness in the Monolith Labyrinth, El sacrifices himself by casting the Cogitoergos skill during the battle, making the entity pervious to the party's attacks as it is bathed in a red light.

Nomenclature

Cogitoergos, rendered in-game as コキトエルコス kokitoerukosu, is likely a shortened corruption of the Latin cogito, ergo sum, which is ordinarily rendered in Japanese as コギト・エルゴ・スム. This shortening and the lack of dakuten may have been done to fit menu space constraints. Cogito, ergo sum is the first principle of the philosophy of René Descartes, and is usually translated as "I think, therefore I am."
