Profile
Origin
The upyr[a] is a creature in the folklore of southern Russia and of Ukraine.
Upyrs have featured in literature, such as A. K. Tolstoy's 1841 novella Upyr. Alexander Afanasyev included a story of the upyr as the 363rd folk tale in his series of books containing Russian folk tales.
The word "vampire" comes from вампир vampir, a Serbian word which derives from the same Slavic root. The Polish upiór also comes from this root.
