Orpheus is a Persona in the Persona series. He is the initial Persona of the protagonist of Persona 3, Makoto Yuki, as well as of his female counterpart from Persona 3 Portable, Kotone Shiomi.

Profile

Origin

Orpheus[a] is a legendary bard and hero of Greek lore. He earned the title "Master of Strings" due to his mastery of the lyre, which is able to charm everyone including inanimate objects whenever he plays. He is primarily known as the son of the Thracian King Oeagrus and the muse Calliope though in some accounts he is instead the son of the god Apollo. He appears in numerous famous tales, the most famous of which is his descent into the underworld in search of his recently deceased wife Eurydice.

Design

Orpheus has a robotic body with a predominantly blue and silver color scheme and a lyre attached to its back. According to designer Shigenori Soejima, Orpheus was created primarily with the approach of reflecting the Persona's mythology, so Orpheus has an organic head and an artificial body due to a legend that he was beheaded by a jealous woman.[1] Orpheus's head has white hair, black skin and red eyes, and it is attached to the robotic body with a red scarf covering his neck. It has small speaker grilles in its chest, and a large loudspeaker in its abdomen. Orpheus's lyre is also seen as the protagonist's seat in the Velvet Room.

In Persona 3 Portable, the female protagonist has a version with a different color scheme; it has a gold and reddish brown body with long brown hair and white skin, and its lyre is shaped like a heart. However, this version of Orpheus is still intended to be male to match the gender of the mythological figure, but with the characteristics of the female protagonist projected onto it.[2]

Beginning in Persona 3 FES, another version of Orpheus was added, Orpheus Telos, which features another color scheme.
